Treasure Island Day 1: Escape to Hipster Camp

The bars in the Mission must have been reminiscent of an old ghost town Oct. 17th night, as its ever-reliable crowd of flannel and leather jacket-donning patrons had other plans—Day 1 of the Treasure Island Music Festival in San Francisco. We had heard that Saturday was completely sold-out, and we didn’t have to look much further than the line of kids wearing the telltale decorated mesh stockings, hoodies (you know the ones I’m talking about) and Ray Bans to figure out why. …MORE

Forro in the Dark – Light A Candle (Review)

Forro in the Dark

Light a Candle

Released by National Geographic/Nublu

The well-seasoned quartet behind Forro in the Dark assembled a provocative collage of tunes infusing the traditional sounds of rural Brazilian music with a rainbow of eclectic styles. Light a Candle, the group’s second full-length, is downright spellbinding. After coming together at New York’s Nublu nightclub, Mauro Refosco, Davi Vieira, Jorge Continentino, and Guilherme Monteiro, went from playing a weekly residency to touring the Americas. Recorded in six days, the new LP is the latest project for the globetrotting trendsetters. In Portuguese, “forro” means “to party,” and the band trades synths ...

Desert Judgment: Coachella Edition

Desert Judgment: Coachella Edition

First off, a big thumbs up to everybody for keeping the Empire Polo Field clean. For those not at Coachella 2006, the Empire Polo Field was literally a obstacle course of empty bottles and half-filled cups filled with lemonade and some sort of human regurgitation. This year, people were actually cleaning up after themselves and collecting other people’s empty bottles so they can trade it for one fresh bottle of water. It’s true what they say, “one man’s garbage is another man’s treasure.”

A very, very, big thumbs down to Coachella for not letting independent vendors in the festival. Don’t get me wrong, I love the fact that the absence of these merchants led to me having a easier time parking my car but what can we do when we’re waiting …

Brazilian Girls – Talk to La Bomb (Review)

Brazilian Girls

Talk to La Bomb

Released by Verve Forecast

On paper this should have been great. Combine the worldly sophistication of NY's art-house darlings, with the production skills of Ric Ocasek (of The Cars) and Mark Plati (who's production credits include David Bowie, The Cure and Dee Lite), add the mystique (not to mention the expense) of recording at Hendrix's infamous Electric Lady Studios and you should come up with something interesting right? 'Last Call,' 'Sweatshop,' 'Le Territoire,' and 'Rules of The Game' show signs of the detached elegance that made Brazilian Girl's self-titled debut unique, providing ...
