Live Review: Trail of Dead @ Echoplex

The night started off badly for me. I’d never been to the Echoplex, but I’d looked it up on Google Maps before I left and thought that it seemed easy enough find – right off the 101 at Sunset and Glendale Boulevards. Turns out that Sunset doesn’t actually cross Glendale, and the entire Echo Park neighborhood is an intertwining maze of diagonal streets that end and begin again suddenly. As if that didn’t make it difficult enough, the venue isn’t marked, you’re just supposed to instinctively KNOW where the damn thing is. I drove all the way down Sunset until it turned south. Then before I knew it I somehow ended up downtown. I headed back north circling the same old strung-out hooker on the corner of Sunset and Park until I finally spotted a tiny sign …

I Was At (Not That)

NYC gets guest appearances on the regular, but us Left Coasters do get it. It’s a culture that’s probably set up by Hot 97’s Summer Jam, the NYC radio station’s yearly parade of guest stars and surprise cameos and headline-grabbing antics. Everyone lives and works in the Big Apple while everyone of note comes out here to film. And yet, still…

We show up to Jay-Z and Mary J at the Hollywood Bowl with hopes of some miraculous Dr. Dre cameo. We just barely get Memphis Bleek.

We attend some pre-VMA T-Pain show on a rumor that anybody other than those damn dancing clowns makes a special guest appearance. It’s nothing but those damn dancing clowns. No T-Wayne. No T-Kanye. Not even a T-Fat Joe.

My First Arrest by Junclassic
I’m chillin in Baisley Park in Southside Queens. It’s me and my nephew, E.P.I.C. He’s 15 at the time but grown in the mind. I brought two L’s, stuffed wit that BK murder chocolate, wit me. So I light up… vibin wit Ep. Soon as I pass the L to him, I hear a van screeching up. Through the park!! Only “the boys” do that shit. I froze like death was coming….

On My Own

Released by Soulstar

Even if you buy this release for one of the housier alternates, listen to the stunning original of 'On My Own' so you can appreciate where the remixers got their inspiration. All three remixes thankfully stay true to the original, highlighting the sultry vocals with deeper tones that carry the song's inherent jazzy elements. Kudos to Soulstar on this stellar selection.
