Kanye, Arcade Fire, Steve Wonder :: 22 Bands We Loved At Austin City Limits

Austin, Texas survived her 10th year of the Austin City Limits festival. Thousands of Austinites and tourists flooded into Zilker Park last weekend for food, drink and, most of all, the sweet sound of music. C3 productions, the producers of this three-day event, thankfully worked out some of the kinks that plagued the festival in years past. In collaboration with Austin Parks and Recreation, C3 contributed to an irrigation system for Zilker, eliminating the “Dust Bowl” phenomenon two years ago. Adequate water filling stations, misters and an ingenious recycling system (fill a bag, get a free T-shirt) all contributed to pleasant and uplifting experience much needed by the folks in Central Texas recently ravaged by wildfires.

SXSW Day Two Recap: Dropping The Bombs To Dropping The Funk

A variety of sounds stream within a day's travel in Texas.

As the sun shined along the sunny streets of Austin for the 2nd day of SXSW, the noticeable trend of Sixth Street shenanigans were multiplying rapidly. Jugglers, free-huggers and bands setting up on every street corner were appearing amongst the thousands of patrons walking through the controlled chaos. Straying away from the eventual headache, the Levi’s FADER Fort once again became a hub for bloggers, writers and media as a clubhouse to keep the chaos away. It also turned out to be a bit better than the first day there.

The combination of a perfect sunny day, chilled beverages and great music are a classic amongst many concertgoers. All of that was fulfilled with a greater emphasis on music, as Local …

SXSW Day Two Picks: Bomba Estereo and Holy Fuck (Video)

Returning for their second SXSW tour-de-force, Bogota’s Bomba Estereo unleashed a frenzy at Levi’s Fader Fort yesterday evening. It still surprised me that Liliana Saumet never dreamed of becoming a musician and yet, here she is. Her hybrid singing and rapping style is more polished since last seeing her perform; however, her raw energy is formidable and contagious. Perhaps more surprising was drummer Kike Egurrola, who had his moment to shine and delivered unstoppable beat after beat. It must have been the setting which allowed everyone’s personality and skills to fully unfurl before the audience. Julian Salazar on the guitar tore it up and certainly the mastermind behind it all, Simon Mejia, was in fine form alternating between his bass, computer, and keys. Ultimately, all the touring the band has done to support 2009’s Blow Up has refined their dynamic …

Best of ‘09: Indie Heart & Electro Beat (Areti)

Kiss 2009 Goodbye: Highlights through the Lens of Music

I played Drake’s “Best I Ever Had” in groups of six, saw Wilco back-to-back at The Wiltern, put my right-hand high with Kid Sister, blew a kiss to Ben Gibbard as Hollywood Bowl exploded with fireworks, chilled with A Place to Bury Strangers, worked-out to Miike Snow, beatboxed with Matis, moved to Silver Lake, boogied down at Nightmares on Wax, got blinded by Mandy’s rock, took my clothes off at Phoenix…

Bomba Estereo x Amoeba = Fiyah

I caught up with Colombian electro-cumbia act, Bomba Estereo, at Amoeba in Hollywood on Monday night. I’ve seen other in-stores before, but there’s nothing quite like seeing folks clapping and full-out dancing in the record store. Instead of toning down the performance to fit the tiny stage and brightly lit space, Bomba brought it out full force. Lead singer, Liliana Saumet, has a phenomenal raw performing style (she never planned to be in music) and her fashion choices make all the other hipster girls look like plain Janes. Simon Mejia, on bass and samples, is Li’s counterpoint, steering the band just enough to prevent a mad-house of rhythms and rhymes. It was my second time catching the band, and they continue to surprise and enchant me–and that says a lot. I’ve had the debut, Blow Up, since the end of …
