Röyksopp @ The Wiltern 3/29/11 (Live Review)

“That’ll be 28 dollars,” said the bartender at The Wiltern, as I cautiously slid my debit card to him thinking he might have made a mistake. “Wait, 28 dollars for two beers. Are you sure?” He nods, annoyed. Enter the heavy bass and vocal sirens of Röyksopp to refresh a beer and make it taste like, well, a 14 dollar beer. Norwegian duo and electronic music veterans Röyksopp prove once again that they’re still relevant and should be excused for their uncharacteristic work with pop artist (and fellow Scandinavian) Robyn. The duo, composed of the unassuming yet brilliant Svein Berge and Torbjørn Brundtland, performed in front of the appreciative crowd at the historic Wiltern in Los Angeles last Tuesday March 29th. Admittedly, not very well versed in the vast catalog of music Röyksopp has produced since their inception …

5 reasons you still want to pay $$$ to go to a Dylan concert

Tags:

On Saturday the 13th of December I went to a Bob Dylan concert in Washington DC. Despite the fact that over the past few years Mr. Zimmerman has gotten more than sub-par live reviews while on his “never ending tour,” most of which say that he’s a terrible performer and that nothing sounds like it used to, I still shelled out those sixty five bucks (that’s with a student discount!), plus $5.25 shipping and tax to see him perform. And gosh darnet, it was well spent. Here’s why:

  • The concert was hosted by George Washington University and Dylan was playing in the Charles E. Smith Center, aka the gym. Now, there are definite downsides to this: Number one, the gym. I highly doubt that I was the only person who felt like she was in highschool again, smushed into a room …

Blitzen Trapper – Destroyer of the Void (Review)

    Blitzen Trapper

    Destroyer of the Void

    Released by Sub Pop Records

Blitzen Trapper are back with their 5. album Destroyer of the Void, following their highly acclaimed 2008 album Furr. This will be the year where they can enjoy the fruits of their own labor, after 10 years of releasing records. The album is chock-full of American music influences; from the ‘60s folk to the country and prog sounds of the ’70s, to the pop balladry of the ’80s. The Portland sextet is not afraid to experiment, and their singer/guitarist Eric Early effortlessly adjust his voice to any musical vibe.  Album ...

Josiah Wolf – Jet Lag (Review)

    Josiah Wolf

    Jet Lag

    Released by anticon.

Josiah Wolf steps out of the long shadow cast by WHY? band mate (and younger brother) Yoni Wolf with Jet Lag, an emotive and catchy solo debut. Wolf eschews the stream-of-consciousness vérité of his brother for a more straight-forward approach en route to what is an early contender for album of the year. An expansive canvas of guitar, kalimba, bass, Hammond organ, bells and drums crescendo and fall over twelve brilliantly-arranged tracks. Many wondered if the release would sound like another WHY? album with a different frontman, but multi-instrumentalist Wolf clearly has his own auteristic approach outside of the band. Songs like "Is The Body Hung" and "In The Seam" excel through excellent writing and understated psychedelia. Though it is a great departure from the WHY? sound, Jet Lag certainly shares the mellow, melancholy aesthetic of last year's Eskimo Snow. Themes of love, death, and failure lurk behind every autumnal note on the album.
