Black Star Debut New Song On Colbert Report :: “Fix Up” (Video)

Stephen Colbert has suddenly become the go-to guy for excellent music performances (better step it up Fallon). Hip-hop legends Black StarTalib Kweli and Yasiin Bey (the rapper formerly known as Mos Def)—were on the Colbert Report last night to premier a new Madlib-produced song, “Fix Up,” as well as “Astronomy (8th Light).” But much like Radiohead’s Colbert appearance last week, the highlight was the interview with Colbert himself. Rock the Bells 2011 Review

Nas and Badu Reign On This Epic Day Of Hip-Hop

With triumphs by Nas and Erykah Badu, let downs from Black Star and Lauryn Hill, and missing pieces with Wu-Tang Clan, Rock the Bells 2011 was as exciting, confusing and controversial as the hip-hop generation that it celebrates.

Talib Kweli, Gutter Rainbows (Review)

Talib Kweli

Gutter Rainbows

Released by Javotti Media/3D/Blacksmith

Turn-of-the-year releases are generally greeted with a semi-yawn. With the dust of a phenomenal music year still settling, industry trailblazer Talib Kweli has set his sites on the tricky first quarter burn. His first album free from the constraints of any label directives but his own, Talib seems to be coasting just a bit on this cut-and-paste session. As in, from a pure musical standpoint, outside of a few of repeat-worthy tracks, Gutter Rainbows, is no cure for your current cabin fever.

88-KEYS: Dope Artists, the Youth, and Ralph Lauren

Interview with 88-Keys

Taking a break from promoting his late 2008 release The Death of Adam, 88-Keys was cool enough to hop on the phone with me and catch me up on his life-post URB’s cover story last November. As the producer of classics like Black Star’s “Thieves in the Night” and three songs on Mos Def’s Black on Both Sides (along with his own solo material), 88 has plenty to brag about. The New York native also just got off tour with college sensation Asher Roth and lonely stoner Kid Cudi as a part of the Great Hangover Tour. We spoke about the reception of the album, the difficulty of deciding what clothing to bring on the road (especially when you own almost the entire Ralph Lauren collection), and bridging the gap from old-school to new-school hip-hop fans.
