We spent an undue amount of time in 2010 rocking out to Bethany Cosentino’s instant-retro-indie debut album as Best Coast, mostly because it reminded us equal parts 1990s Riot Grrl heyday, ’70s Runaways punk mischief, and ’60s Shangri-La’s pop perfection. El-P might have shuttered his legendary label Def Jux last year, but the East Coast producer/MC has found a new outlet for his tough and twisted style in Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, who are releasing “Drops Over BKLYN” as part of their singles program, promising 10 tracks in 10 week, and already featuring Best Coast, The Rapture and How To Dress Well.
A good remix can re-ignite excitement for a song that has long since passed sell-by date. “Boyfriend” was the killer lead track off of Best Coast’s 2010 album Crazy For You, one of about three records we kept on repeat all of last year. But like most great pop confections, the album has fallen off the regular rotation. This remix by Swedish nu-disco don Lindstrøm reimagines the twee indie number as a serious ’70s epic tune with ABBA overtones so loud you can’t possibly ignore them.

This year went by faster than a shadow lurking in the night sky but all’s well that ends well. As the year approaches its close and I sit here with my pringles, I thought about all the songs that were constantly and are still being repeated over and over again in my iTunes.
