Ticket Giveaway and Mini-Review: Oddisee – People Hear What They See! (MP3)

Author’s Note:

<Age notwithstanding, I have a noted predilection or down right bias towards that ‘Golden-era’ Hip Hop sound and to most things related to the Soulquarian/Native Tongues movement.  The forthcoming mini-review and coverage may or may not necessarily reflect the ideas shared with my URB compatriots — but it is what I grew up with and happens to be my flavor of choice..  The fact that I’m writing this review first person, should be indicative of my love for this album.>

Now on to our regularly scheduled program:

With the recent drop of Oddisee’s ‘People Hear What They See’ album, my initial impression in speaking with some of my local hip hop heads was literally, ‘This shit is bananas.’  The album sounds as if Oddisee got into Bill and Ted’s infamous time-traveling …

Album in Focus: Proxy’s Debut Album: Music From The Eastblock Jungles Pt 1 via Dim Mak (MP3)

It’s not a big secret that I’m an old school D&B/Jungle head… in fact, some of my craziest rave/club moments have been at D&B events, where people would hang the greeting, “Hey There, Junglin’ Guy” ala Brit Classic, ‘Human Traffic’ as a greeting.

It was more than an pleasant surprise to close my day at the office with a taste Russian producer PROXY’s debut album.  After fighting back the day hangover of covering the SF Giants Victory Parade for another outlet, I took the time to check the album out, and was thrown back to the days of yore when EDM artists would drop albums that were complete and told stories.  PROXY’s two part album, the first of which drops on November 6th, is a rare body of work that invokes …

DJ Concept Serves Up A Fresh Pot Of Paella With Sonidas Para Tu Alma (MP3)

When we travel, many of us find a cultural distinction that we tend to gravitate towards and explore. For most of us, it’s the food, for others it’s the wine and the women (or men), and for many, such as DJ Concept of The Bash Brothers, it’s the music. On a recent transatlantic journey to Spain, the hip-hop renaissance man conveyed his connection to the countries music by extending his hotel check-out and tapping out some beats on his Maschine, using only Spanish influenced samples. The result is a beat tape, aptly titled Sonidas Para Tu Alma, which translates to ‘Sounds For The Soul.’ The eleven track project is your for the affordable price of $Free.99, which you can both stream and/or download below, courtesy of the good folks at Bandcamp. For more ‘conceptually’ created free releases from the talented deejay/producer, be sure to check out both M99: Dexter Beat Tape and Flight Patterns. Buen provecho…

Mux Mool – Planet High School (Review)

Mux Mool

Planet High School

Released by Ghostly International

On his previous releases for Moodgadget and then Ghostly, Mux Mool focused on the buzzing, electronic extremes to which trip hop can go. Harsh edges and layers or noise were piled atop the grooves. It was always distinct, arresting and worthy of a listen, but lacked a versatility to take the songs out of the dark corners of the club. Albums played out as collections of individual notions. His sound found ways to stand it out, but there was never a sense of comfort behind the beats. All that has ...

Yung Classix – Life On The Grid (Review)

Yung Classix

Life On The Grid

Though Detroit, Michigan is known for creating legends in the world of hip-hop (and music in general), it is also nice to know that the upcoming artists from that part of the globe are continuing that legacy in their own way. Yung Classix, rising producer from D-town and part of the "BLAT! Pack," is such an artist. After countless beat battles and even a place in the 2010 Red Bull Big Tune Battle, he has released his fourth instrumental album entitled Life On The Grid. The project is a ...
