Matthew Dear – “You Put A Smell On Me” (Breakbot Remix) (MP3)

If we’re being totally honest, there was some controversy at URB HQ over the five-star review given to Matthew Dear’s third full-length on Ghostly International, Black City. Some folks thought the album was a breakthrough by a long favorite artists, while other felt the album lacked the jaw-dropping brilliance of his past work. One thing we all do agree on at URB is Breakbot unfailing ability to turn cool tunes into wicked yacht-techno remixes. So it goes with the funky titled “You Put A Smell On Me,” coming courtesy of Self-Titled Mag. …MORE

Matthew Dear – Black City (Review)

Matthew Dear

Black City

Released by Ghostly International

Captivating distractions are everywhere within the confines of the titular Black City of Matthew Dear’s fourth full length album. The man who makes the techno world shake under aliases Audion, False and Jabberjaw, uses his given name for releases that seem to continuously grow more adventurous and approachable, and this latest effort finds him at his best on all fronts. Matthew Dear – “I Can’t Feel” (MP3)

Matthew Dear might have the most recognizable voice in techno, a smooth baritone that has appeared on dozens of his own tracks since his 2003 breakthrough, Leave Luck To Heaven. Matthew Dear: Man Of Many Phases

A quick chat with the master of monikers.

Making a surplus of music is never a bad thing and neither is it to separate all those tunes accordingly when your name is Matthew Dear. The monikers that embody the producer are ones that are tastefully different as well as similarly noticeable. Under the guise of Audion, he releases deep, tech-swerved grooves and melodies to fuel a dancefloor’s dark and sensual roots; with Jabberjaw, he prescribes doses of minimal beats and maximum atmosphere while making fans want more and more with every passing second; under the moniker of False he works for Richie Hawtin’s M_nus label and captures bits and pieces of Hawtin’s signature minimal sounds. Last but not least, the name that is Matthew Dear provides lyrical, soulful and communicative power through his songs, and amplifies that live with the inclusion of his “Big Hands” band. Needless to say, the guy doesn’t always have time to chat, however we caught Matthew for a bit after his highly successful Audion audiovisual tour to talk origins, favorite records and upcoming endeavors.

Movement 2009 – Day Three

The weather stayed idyllic, the sounds stayed loud and the crowds who stuck around for the final day of Movement 2009 were treated to massive sets from Detroit’s techno legends, those who took influence from them and someone they looked back to for inspiration.

Flying Lotus

Things started early in the afternoon with glitchy beatmaker Flying Lotus bouncing on stage in a J Dilla T-shirt to the thunderous beats he was pulling from his laptop. The crowd showed plenty of bounce too, but FlyLo seemed to be enjoying himself as much as anyone at that stage. The laid back and loosely arranged set touched on everything breakbeat, showcased a few of his newest tracks and concluded with an impromptu chopping of session of hardcore jungle breaks.
