Some Further Thoughts on Goblin

Tyler the Creator, frontman of L.A. hip-hop convoy OFWGKTA (Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All), won’t admit to it but I’m sure he understands his audience to be predominantly white, suburban, indie-teens-in-training. Let’s try to keep that in mind here, now that there seems to be a somewhat recognizable consensus on Tyler the Creator’s second full-length album and first major label release, Goblin on XL Records. From where I’m standing it seems like folks are a bit dissatisfied. Granted there hasn’t been too many local hip-hop acts with this kind of trajectory since the astronomical rise of Lupe Fiasco, the quizzical introduction of Wiz Khalifa and others, this record leaves a lot to be desired. Ruby Hornet Interviews Wale (Video)

RH TV: Interview With Wale At The Sprite Step-Off from Ruby Hornet on Vimeo.

RH went in depth with Wale about his upbringing and cultural influences ranging from Houston, Chicago and his hometown D.C. Then RH threw him some softballs until he owned up to rocking  “MMMbop” (forgive me.) That may cause some fans to raise an eyebrow but at least he doesn’t seem embarrassed about it. Wale “Beast (prod. 9th Wonder)”

Here’s a new cut that didn’t make the cut on Wale’s Attention Deficit album. Produced by 9th Wonder, it’s got a nice groove going, but I’m hardly surprised it was left off the album. (okayplayer)

Wale – “Center of Attention” (MP3)

So Wale’s “Attention Deficit” has been out since Tuesday and I haven’t copped it yet. So right now this song, while good, is serving as a (nagging) reminder to buy it. It’s an iTunes bonus so it’s not like I’m cheating by checking it out. But it’s pretty dope considering most “bonus” tracks aren’t that great anyway. Hear it for yourself thanks to prefix.
