Atmosphere Announces New Album

Minneapolis hip-hop veterans Atmosphere are getting ready to release their first proper album since 2008′s When Life Gives You Lemons, You Paint That Shit Gold. But there’s been plenty of new music from Slug and Ant, in the form of various digital releases, free and monetized (including the Too All My Friends EP, which you voted as the Best Album of 2010, despite it’s limited release).

Last week, we reported that Atmosphere was embarking on a tour of their homestate of Minnesota, and releasing the free track “Minnesota Nice” to commemorate the occasion. So it’s not terribly surprising that the duo’s sixth proper album, The Family Sign, also taps in to that familial vibe. Atmosphere :: “Minnesota Nice” (MP3)

Atmosphere have always been able to make the most out of their populist perception. That’s how Slug and Co. won the URB 2010 Readers Poll for a digital only EP while million sellers like Kanye scored substantially lower. Build your crowd, embrance your niche, and live a happy life.

Here’s another good example of that family vibe the Rhymesayer camp puts out consistently. The crew is embarking on the Welcome to Minnesota tour, a 5-city jaunt through their home state that is lucky to get one stop on most tours. And to go along with it, they’re giving away a new track, “Minnesota Nice,” a posse cut featuring all the MCs on the tour—Slug, Prof (Stophouse), Mr. Gene Poole and Felipe Cuauhtli (Los Nativos). Atmosphere – “The Best Day” (Video)

Slug and the Rhymesayers camp have always been pretty talented when it comes to crafting their hip-hop dream on a shoestring budget. The newest video of the To All My Friends EP continues in that spirit. Basically, they took a buch of still photos taken on the road during the To All My Friends tour this fall with Blueprint, Grieves, Budo & DJ Rare Groove., projected them onto various surfaces (buildings, garbage trucks, etc…) and videotaped the projects to make the video. That’s pretty darn efficient use of reasources in this economy.

R.I.P. Rhymesayers MC Eyedea

Minneapolis’ Citypages is reporting that hometown MC Eyedea has tragically passed away at the age of 28.
