A Decade of Mochilla (Part Two) Mixed by Coleman (Video & MP3)

Below are B+’s words regarding this mix.  This is definitely a great mix that helps showcase Mochilla’s deep body of work.  Music from DJ Shadow, Jackson Conti, Suite for Ma Dukes, King Britt, Quantic, J. Rocc, Nobody, DJ Nuts and more. Enjoy and Happy Holidays.

——————————————————————————————————-
The response to the first part of this mix has been incredible.   Thank you for all the support, retweeting, and reposting.  Mochilla loves the love.   Part two here today for download is stepping the game up and to quote Coleman, “I wanted this mix to slap everyone in the face and get them to pay attention.”   It is purely rhetorical of course, our version of a slap in the face is the caress of boss nova, the thump of cubia or the heat stopping wind sucking gaps of great syncopation.  This mix has all of that.

Remember of course these are 20 minute teasers for the full mixes coming in 2011.

Just a quick note on the photo that we used on the cover – I snapped this one at the great “La Marcha” way back in 2001.   It was taken in the Zocalo in Mexico City and Maldita Vecindad were performing in solidarity with the EZLN.   The kid on his friend’s shoulders with the El Che shirt embodies all that we wanted Mochilla to be way back in ‘01 – engaged, excited, energetic and happy. Our brother and design guru Keith Tamashiro flipped it into our first logo and Stephen Serato has reflipped it into our 10 year mix cover.

This will warm your ears, brighten your heart and remind you of the strength of good music.  Download, hit play and you know – turn it up…

Thanks for all your support and happy holidays,

Miguel Atwood-Ferguson : “Celebrate Tradition” Interview (Video)

Here are some of my shorthand notes based around a conversation I had with Miguel Atwood-Ferguson at his apartment in July 2010.  all of the quotes are not verbatim and are simply some of his thoughts jotted down by me. When I arrived at his home for our interview, the front door was ajar, “It’s actually perfect timing. I’ve been on the phone all day, booking rehearsals.” He admits once I walk inside, “The Prophet” by Kahlil Gibran grabs my eye on top of a stack of books, across from hundreds of CDs neatly lined against the wall. Framed posters of past masters frame the musical instruments in the living room, which has a shrine in the center.

Exclusive: Arthur Verocai in Los Angeles (Video & MP3)

It has been a week since Brasilian composer/arranger Arthur Verocai performed in Los Angeles.  To have Verocai come to Los Angeles once for Timeless was incredible but getting him back for a reprise is pure magic.  Arthur arrived on Monday afternoon after a long flight from Rio.  After some needed rest we began rehearsals on Tuesday morning.  The delight in the faces of the musicians as the music struck up was palpable.

After some re-arrangements and adjustments the advertised band of 12 became 14.  They added electric guitar player Woody Aplanalp and master percussionist Krishna Booker.  The band is a Timeless All-Star group with mostly musicians who had played in the original series, many from the …

Suite for Ma Dukes – Untitled/Fantastic (Georgia Anne Muldrow Remix) (Video & MP3)

Remixing Suite for Ma Dukes is a brave undertaking.  Several producers and MCs at first accepted and then declined the job.  In the end though, the right person came along.  And that’s none other than Georgia Anne Muldrow.  Just in time for Mother’s Day too.  This project began as an homage to one mother’s love (Ma Dukes) and has now been remixed by another (Georgia Anne Muldrow) with her son Nokware in her lap.  Two incredible women, one amazing track.  Remixed.

Georgia who has done production for Erykah Badu, Mos Def, and partner Dudley Perkins.  She is an amazing person to watch at work.  She seemed so comfortable with the music.  She insisted that she didn’t want to chop the song but …
