Not Far from the Tree: How an Apple Gave Me Life

by URB Co-Founder Raymond L. Roker

I’m hardly alone in my lamenting the passing of such an iconic genius as Apple co-founder Steve Jobs or in celebrating his immeasurable contributions to technology and culture. But I’m moved to not only share in the collective outpouring of emotion for a man most of us have never met—and we may rightfully be accused of idealizing to at least some extent—but also how his life’s work helped me pursue mine. I’ve never lost sight of Jobs’ role in creating the indispensible tools that gave me a creative platform and career. And, by extension, helped me touch so many others through printed and digital media. …MORE

MySpace (and Tom) Goes After iTunes (Video & MP3)

The current chapter of MySpace’s upcoming incarnation goes like this: MySpace adds Justin Timberlake as a friend; Justin Timberlake accepts; Myspace and Justin Timberlake conspiracy against iTunes. Actually, this is going to be the plot to the upcoming straight-to-dvd movie, “Social Network 8: It’s Tom’s Payback, Bitches!!!” where Justin Timberlake teams up with Tom, played of course by Tom Cruise, and they infiltrate Apple Headquarters in a explosive action, thriller, comedy, drama, documentary film. But before that, there will be a long training montage set to “Eye of a Tiger” where MySpace finally admits to his lifelong addiction to horoscopes and finally realizes that in order to be great, he must….not read horoscopes?

Ok, I’m quite confused at this plot because one, I could have sworn horoscopes were the least of the problems leading to MySpace’s demise and two, what did iTunes ever …

Lil B – I’m Gay (I’m Happy) (Review)

New Rapture Album Better Than The iPad

Now stripped to a three-piece following the departure of Mattie Safer, NYC dance-punks The Rapture are back in the studio, this time with Philippe Zdar (the producer behind Phoenix’s breakthrough album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix). And the band isn’t shy in saying their fourth full-length will school a certain new device coming to market in an interview with Pitchfork.

“Being in Paris makes the whole process seem kind of mysterious, a little magical,” says saxophonist/percussionist/keyboardist Gabe Andruzzi. “It’s going to be a mystical, magical album.” I tell him that “mystical, magical” reminds me of Steve Jobs introducing the iPad.

“Our new album’s gonna be fucking 100 times better than the iPad,” he jokes. “With this record you’re going to be interfacing with your soul in ways that have never happened before.”
