Telefon Tel Aviv’s Charlie Cooper RIP

So sad, so so sad to have to report this, but one half of brilliant Chicago-based Telefon Tel Aviv, Charlie Cooper, passed away five days ago. Sad this is because I had the pleasure of working with a 2007 remix compilation by the duo and through them became absolutley obessed with Apparat (the boys had given devine treatment to the track Komponent, HIGHLY recommended!), Ellen Alien, and a whole brilliant world of minimal tech that is arrising today. Sad this is because ‘Immolate Yourself’, the band’s 2009 LP, basically is a masterpiece, really just a stunning record I wish everyone could hear and feel. Highly appropo it is I suppose that at 31 Cooper would leave such a timeless piece of work to enjoy.

German producer/ Shitkatapult label co-founder Sascha Ring, a.k.a. Apparat, has followed up his 2003 solo full-length, Duplex, by building Walls, albeit none overtly defensive. Ring has merely chosen the concept of Walls to mean structure, rather than an agenda to knock down further divisions in the micro vs. macro/diffusive vs. overdriven techno debate.
