Last September, we reported that Aphex Twin and Jonny Greenwood each contributed to an orchestral performance in Poland as part of the European Cuture Congress. There were some interesting audience videos at the time, but now Warp Records has unveiled a proper video of the full performance of Richard Jame’s contribution, as well as the interesting additional tidbit that James conducted the orchestra via a custom remote set-up using MIDI controllers, headphones, and remote visual cues. Welcome to the future.
On Tuesday, Radiohead celebrated the release of their TKOL RMX 1234567 album with an event in London that featured DJ sets by TKOL remixers Jamie XX, Caribou, Lone and Illum Sphere. The evening started off with a brief set by Thom Yorke, who has been spending plenty of time behind the decks lately—including a surprise set at Low End Theory last spring. You can download Yorke’s set, which featured tracks from Headhunter, Madvillian, Aphex Twin and Ramadanman, and watch the singer play records on The Boiler Room website.
Next up for Yorke is a mix he did for the BBC’s 6Mix, which will air on Sunday, Oct. 17th. The show features Yorke playing and discussing some of his favorite current records, including Zomby, Low, Emika and James Blake. He also plays a few Radiohead remixes that didn’t make it onto the TKOL RMX 1234567 record. Check out the tiny teaser for the show.

Aphex Twin and Radiohead are popular acts that break all the rules of what it takes to be popular. So it’s easy to draw parallels between Richard D. James and Johnny Greenwood,as the ’90s sonic auteurs who have proven to be surpriusingly accessible to audiences—despite their clearly dissonant instincts.
Those instincts were on full display this weekend as Greenwoods and James performed at the European Cuture Congress with famed avante-guarde classical composer Krzysztof Penderecki. Sadly, the three did not meet together on stage, with Greenwood partnering Penderecki the first night, and James joining the orchestra on the second. But the results of each collaboration are quite stunning, as is the video of lasers shooting over the classical music-loving audience.

Among the hundreds of indie labels that lost tens, if not hundreds, of thousands of dollars in merchandice in the weekend’s SONY/PIAS warehouse fire in London, legendary imprint WARP Records is now reporting that most of their 21 year backstock was destroyed. In a statement issued on their website, the label explained the current status of upcoming releases by CANT, Plaid and Battles. More concerning was the reality that some old releases—classic electronic music from Aphex Twin, Autechre, Broadcast and hundreds of other—my never be available in physical form again.
Other beloved labels similarly effected include 4AD, Ninja Tune and Domino. An emergency fund has been set up to help all of the indie labels recover from this devistating blow.
