Scott Harding Benefit Show

A Benefit concert for notable music producer and engineer, Scott Hardy, will be held on Mar 19th at the Highline Ballroom in NYC. While a passenger in a car service after a late night mix session, the car Scott was in was hit and crushed his T5 vertebrae leaving him partially paralyzed. Like many other Americans, Scott is without health insurance and is facing a great amount of medical and legal fees. Turntables on the Hudson’s resident strummer May not man the decks, but he’s a beast on production, and his worldly compositions are nothing short of hypnotic.

9. Blue Scholars – Bayani
Geologic and Sabzi provide the classic one-two punch as emcee-DJ/producer of this surging Seattle rap duo. Their sound is smooth and evocative, yet undeniably fierce.

8. The Pimps of Joytime – High Steppin’
Reserve a slot in between Ozomatli and Antibalas at your next tree-fest for these funksters outta N’Orleans and Brooklyn. If they bring this kind of heat on CD, I can’t wait to see them rock a bandshell.

Fishbone, The Coup Rock Vermont

While tens of thousands reveled in Lollapalooza madness in downtown Chicago last weekend, a small fraction of that number descended on a hayfield in the greener pastures of northeastern Vermont for what is undoubtedly one of the best kept secrets in all of music festivals. Lollapalooza May hold the crown as the largest independent music fest in the U.S., but the Northeast Kingdom Music Festival might just be the most organic. And it ain't no second-rate show, either. After rousing performances from headliners Gogol Bordello, Antibalas and The Crown City Rockers a year ago made the event worth repeating for this music fan, this year's roster found Cali acts Fishbone and The Coup take top billing while NYC hip-hop was well represented with The Real Live Show, The Hip Hop ReEducation Program and Cassettes Won't Listen. …

Antibalas Return to Brooklyn

In New York, Antibalas have long been one of the leaders in the funk/afro-beat scene and each album (Security being their fourth) seems to increase their exposure and acclaim to a wider audience. Using legendary afro-beat inventor Fela Kuti as a starting point, the orchestra-sized band excels in long, improvisational jams that's equal parts African polyrhythms and horn-driven dirty funk.

When the band took the stage to a sold-out Warsaw in Brooklyn, NY, last Saturday night, the outfit of choice varied from 60s classic suit to war paint, exemplifying both the funk and afro-beat sides of the group. For two hours non-stop, the group used their studio recordings as a jumping off point to explore their more improvisational side.
