Dirty Beaches @ The Echo 04/28/11 (Live Review)

I knew what I was getting myself into. I made the appropriate mental adjustments to enjoy a show with a crowd I readily don’t frolic with, partly by chance, partly by destiny, and wholly by confusion. Still, I made the trek to “cosmopolitan” mecca Echo Park, California. I was there to enjoy the up and coming talent and doo-wop drone sounds of Dirty Beaches. Amongst the painfully nonchalant frequents of the now reputable The Echo, Dirty Beaches did work and interpolated some furious toe-tapping, of which I was no doubt a part of. Out the window went any concerns or reservation I had about thoroughly enjoying myself in an alien environment. Good tunes have a good habit of doing that.

Röyksopp @ The Wiltern 3/29/11 (Live Review)

“That’ll be 28 dollars,” said the bartender at The Wiltern, as I cautiously slid my debit card to him thinking he might have made a mistake. “Wait, 28 dollars for two beers. Are you sure?” He nods, annoyed. Enter the heavy bass and vocal sirens of Röyksopp to refresh a beer and make it taste like, well, a 14 dollar beer. Norwegian duo and electronic music veterans Röyksopp prove once again that they’re still relevant and should be excused for their uncharacteristic work with pop artist (and fellow Scandinavian) Robyn. Admittedly, not very well versed in the vast catalog of music Röyksopp has produced since their inception …

Rumored to contain a world famous producer, Danish newcomers Jatoma have chosen to keep their identities secret. The single press photo in existence of this trio (who also refuse to release their names) is intentionally blurry, showing three clothed male bodies in silhouette against a vast orange- violet sunset.

Apparat

DJ-Kicks

Released by !K7

German-born and Berlin resident Sascha Ring, also known by his more recognizable name, Apparat, has had one of the most consistent electronic artist careers to date.  With his knack for beautiful compositions and sonic artisanship, Apparat has developed a unique style of his own through a synesthetic blend of ambient, downtempo, techno, glitch and even trip-hop elements. Having an exceptionally bright solo career, his work with Modeselektor last year under the name Moderat was more than exceptional, combining parallel electronic directions into one unique and inspired project that demonstrated ...

The Orb featuring David Gilmour – Metallic Spheres (Review)

The Orb featuring David Gilmour

Metallic Spheres

Released by Columbia

Every post-Wall release by a member of Pink Floyd has been and will be, more or less, a footnote in their illustrious musical history.  From The Final Cut to guitarist/vocalist David Gilmour’s 2006 release On an Island, each album lacked the ambition, the urgency, and the adventurousness that characterized the most enjoyable Floyd albums.  Gilmour and bassist Roger Waters, both of whom had thrived off of their own dysfunctional brand of artistic competitiveness, appeared complacent in those thirty years since The Wall, content to release material that didn’t challenge ...
