Movement Detroit Line-Up: Plastikman, Model 500, Inner City

10th Annual Techno Fest Gets Back To It's Roots

Promoters Paxahau announced the nearly complete line-up for the 10th annual Movement Electronic Music Festival. Headliners for this year’s event—the fourth booked by Paxahau—is notable for it’s unique live performances by Detroit techno legends under various guises—Richie Hawtin (Plastikman), Model 500 (Juan Atkins) and Inner City (Inner CIty). What’s also notable is the absence of the more mainstream dance acts that Paxahau has invited in the past in an attempt to open up the festival to a wider audience. There is no sign of a Benny Bennaci, Moby or Deadmau5 type performer. The closest thing to a crossover might be DJ-A-Trak and Kid Sister, but 2010 clearly marks a return to the purist roots of the original DEMF.

Steve Aoki, A-Trak, DJ Premier and more appear in upcoming documentary

People taking the initiative is always welcome in a time where being bland leads to being cool. So, when someone puts out a product on a culture that’s in a creative limbo, we get to see its ups, downs, and all-arounds. With The Electro Wars, director and creatvor Stephen Vasquez wanted to capture the essence that is electro culture–from the skimpy skirts to the tightest jeans and the most distorted sounds humanly possible to manipulate. With an upcoming screening during the 2010 Winter Music Conference in Miami, Stephen took time to elaborate on his film and his origins of being a electro “warrior.”

This is not Barker’s first partnership with a DJ. He performed for several years as a duo with DJ AM, who passed away in August. A-Trak told URB that he obviously considered the appearance of taking over for his friend AM, but concluded  “at the end of the day, the deciding factor is that Travis wants to do it. It’s his call whether it’s tasteful or the right thing to do.”

Live Review: Ed Banger Seventh Anniversary Party

The beginning of the end may come in a packed house of preteens.

The world of electronic music shifts accordingly to scenes, trends and fads at any given moment. Most of these have a shelf life that withers away within 12-18 months with a re-invention of the prior music scene taking bits and pieces and shining them up into something new and receptive. The world of French/filter house’s decline in the early 2000s gave rise to the formation of the now-famed Ed Banger Records, run by former Daft Punk manager Pedro “Busy P” Winter. Focusing on releasing music that had a slight feel of the past as a well a loud vision of the future, Busy P began work by signing artists such as Sebastian, Kavinsky, DJ Mehdi and the now-golden boys that are Justice. With seven years of music, touring and support from all over the world, Ed Banger landed in New York City to celebrate its seventh anniversary to a packed house at Terminal 5. What ensued is what many patrons accepted as a rowdy good time with distorted bass, an almost rock-show atmosphere and lots of screaming fans; however, for people rooted in the electronic world, they might have expected something entirely and radically different. …MORE
