Dennis Ferrer’s On Health, Wealth and ‘09

Dennis Ferrer, a godfather of house, recently caught up with the Brooklyn kids at Big Shot for a little “how was your ‘09″ chat.  It was an interesting little little conversation that ended with an unexpected health warning.  Dennis is a pretty big name and I have always wondered things like this about big name DJs.

Apparently 2009 saw Dennis booked so much that he ended up joining the Continental Airlines “million mile” program.  Its one of those super secret, get whatever you want kinda gigs because its people like this that are keeping them in business right?!  I have imagined that the process of attaining this would be quite difficult on the body as Ferrer has come to realize. Malakai – Ugly Side of Love (Review)

Malakai

Ugly Side of Love

Released by Invada

In that, though, it remains an endorsement when Geoff Barrow, producer of the aforementioned Bristol based group, wants to release your music. Shut Up and Dance – How The East Was Won 1989-2009 (Review)

Shut Up and Dance

How The East Was Won 1989-2009

Released by Shut Up and Dance

Shut Up and Dance Presents: How The East Was Won 1989-2009 is a lot of music. It’s so much music, had Gilligan’s three-hour tour not gone awry, he’d still have almost half an hour to play on the way back. Then again, when a group with 20 years of history goes into “Let’s make a compilation” mode, not much else can be expected. The UK duo Philip ‘PJ’ Johnson and Carl ‘Smiley’ Hyman (better known as Shut Up and Dance)has put their catalogue on display- not only as artists, ...

Wax Tailor – In the Mood For Life (Le Plan, 2009) (Review)

Wax Tailor

In the Mood For Life

Released by Le Plan

Since 2004 Jean-Christophe Le Saoût has been releasing Euro-styled hip hop for the masses. It’s important to note from whence these beats came and much in the same way that DJ Cam or Nightmares on Wax can be figured as non-residents of the States, Le Saoût – who works under the clever name of Wax Tailor – sits in roughly the same part of the genre. That’s not snide or meant to undercut the Frenchy, but tracks like “Go Without Me,” which features Charlotte Savary on vocals, ultimately sound detached ...
