Animal Farm is the star hip-hop group of their local Portland/Eugene, Oregon. The collective’s trademark seems to be rapping enthusiastically and working in jokes whenever they can. Their melodies tend to be upbeat and honor their predecessors both in style and in their lyrics. The crew takes their craft seriously by devising some pretty original lines like, “My service is to keep the party right like conservatives.” The fun, quirky vibe they emanate sometimes make Animal Farm come off squeaky clean. For example, it’s hard to believe them when they claim, “I got a temper!” in “Mean Streaks.” But being hardcore isn’t a requisite for hip-hop. The animated Animal Farm achieves a classically feel-good tone instead.
