Danny Swain :: Check It Out

1911 Music

One thing must be certain about Danny Swain: He's got to be the first member of URB.com's Next 1000 to have already retired. The South Carolina MC and producer--who's wikipedia page is so serious--retired after his third self-released LP only to pick up the mic again after signing to Definitive Jux. It's a weird carousel, surely, but like all things Def Jux, "weird" is only a jaded way of saying "unique." Danny's music embraces plenty of that Native Tongues vibe--his pre-Def Jux release on his own 1911 Music will be called Danny Is Dead--without ever blatantly copying the blueprint. He gets annoyed by the barrage of Kanye West comparisons, but understands that as a producer-MC packing non-gangsta themes (and owner of a record called The College Kicked-Out) that it might be unavoidable. If it's good enough for Definitive Jux, than it's good enough for URB.com's Next 1000.
