Imagination and mystic vision can paint the most vivid of pictures, with theme and mood implied by visuals…unless you’re The Sound Defects, then you do it ass backwards. From the boards and brains of Indy Indie producer Brian Witzig, The Sound Defects are the artists of auditory storyboards, the unwatchable-movie makers. The latest, Iron Horse, is a testament to TSD’s commitment to authenticity, authentic cop versus outlaw grit. Still, they manage to sneak in the fresh flavor of modern age “hip”. Then again, hip can be retro, hip can be vintage, and hip can be coasting the cusp of the “almost too-new”; The Sound Defects could quite possibly embody all of the above. A sampling savant, Witzig has a knack for all things soulful, jazzy, and even funky (itself relatively progressive in the company of throwback jazz and soul). Horns, porcelain-rouged songbirds, raw snare lines, and sexed-up sax wrapped tight by the familiar bump of hip-hop bass, TSD’s work is a glimpse of the past through the lens of the future. Funk-breaks are a dime a dozen, but the baker behind these boards can get a considerably higher price for his beat-based goods. Somewhere out there a doughboy is giggling.
