RISK Art Gallery: Without Completion
Jason Bentley: KCRW's New Music Director
The qualities of a rapper are usually defined and in some cases stereotypical with the hard core thug/drug dealer turned MC persona. In this world “fitting the mold” has become of more importance than transcribing to ones own unique rap style and talking of one’s environment from their own perspective. The few emcees who are brave enough to avoid the cookie cutter rapper format take a great risk of not being accepted by the majority and ultimately lost in rap’s forgotten ones. So, when MC’s such as Kaboose step up to the plate, a certain level of respect is due. Instead of the watered down lyrics with oversaturated subject matter, Kaboose delivers words laden with introspection that describe his experiences in life and how a higher being has assisted him through his journey. He even goes as far as stating that ‘all of his confidence comes from knowing God’ in his song “Be First”. When asked for a self description he passionately replies that he is ‘a servant of Christ, husband, father and emcee’. This realization has led him to the conclusion that he has the perfect composite for being an MC.
