Jason Bentley: KCRW's New Music Director
Most white rappers try to avoid their white-ness. But MC Richie Cunning doesn’t bother, by embracing a name that sounds a lot like Richie Cunningham’s from Happy Days, and calling one of his songs “Richie Cunning’s Day Off,” a pretty blatant reference to the day Ferris played hooky. When he explains on the track that he’s taking a “Day Off” for “other rappers sake,” I started to get it. Rich ain’t scared of his skin color, or much of anything else—he didn’t even flinch in the YouTube video of him watching 2 Girls 1 Cup!— and that fearlessness definitely lend itself to his surprising grit, undeniable swagger and perfectly ill flow. Feel out the Grizzly Man mixtape and cop Night Train when it comes out and you’ll feel me.
