This week’s podcast comes from the dark soldier from the 313, MGUN. The alias of Manuel Gonzales has already put out a sizable discography since his 2010 debut on Wild Oats, the imprint run by fellow Detroit producer Kyle Hell. Gonzales has kept busy with stirring releases for the UK-based Don’t be Afraid label and the ever-evolving collective of releases that make up Will Bankhead’s label, The Trilogy Tapes; evoking a classic sense of Detroit whilst keeping his foot towards the futurism that made it a staple of electronic music. The sounds of MGUN are a certain blend of sonics that don’t warrant thoughts, just vibes. If you’re thinking about it, you’re doing it wrong. And considering that we here at URB are always trying to do it right, we implore you to check out his newest EP on Don’t Be Afraid “If You’re Reading This”, while at the same time checking out his amazing entry for this week’s podcast series.

We at URB are delighted to present this week’s podcast, coming from the newest signing to R&S as well as a proper techno veteran, Paula Temple. Ever since she gained support from Dave Clarke, Claude Young and Jeff Mills in the early 2000s, Temple has laid low in terms of her audible output. Her first release, “The Speck Of The Future” was released on Chris McCormack’s Materials imprint to high praise, cementing her place in fiery techno lore for years to come. However, Temple didn’t stay put in the realm of techno, as she ventured off to aliases such as Fragile X and Jaguar Woman, where she would explore other realms of the sonic spectrum; not to mention co-developed and toured with the Grex MXF8 MIDI controller for years.

After a significantly enduring hiatus, Temple came back to not only bring a thunderous set of tracks to R&S, but also became the first female producer on the label’s legendary roster within its 25+ year history. Her mix for URB is nothing short of amazing, showing that Temple has stayed incredibly sharp within her techno sensibilities; often melding Detroit, Berlin, and UK styles with hints of industrial chaos in the most seamless of fashions. One might want to fist pump so hard he might cause a riot, but that might be the point of this mix. We don’t endorse rioting, unless its in the privacy of your own home. You’ve been advised. Enjoy the mix; tracklist down below.

This week’s URB podcast is a special delivery courtesy of TJ Hertz, better known in the underground as the man behind the sounds of Objekt. Within a two-year span, the Berlin-based producer has seemingly taken storm of the worlds of techno and bass music by simply blurring the line entirely; with his two self-released white-label 12s causing a spike in maniacal dancefloor activity worldwide. It didn’t matter where you went; a rooted dubstep party in London, a techno party in Berlin, or a NYC event that catered to both; you were going to hear an Objekt tune.

After following his own releases up with an appearance on Hessle Audio and Bleep’s GRN label series (split with badman Cosmin TRG), Hertz comes to New York City as a honorary participant for the illustrious Red Bull Music Academy. While he’s here in North America, Hertz will embark on a couple of other dates for the taking, hitting up a couple of NYC sonic sanctuaries and going westward onto L.A. and San Francisco. Once you check out this mix (and lose your mind to it), you’d be wise to check out Objekt if he’s in a town near you. Can’t miss. Check out his mix for URB, his tour dates, and his unique tracklist down below. If you can figure out the tunes in this, we’ll give you a cookie. Or not. But enjoy the mix, nonetheless.

This week’s URB podcast heat comes from Philadelphia’s favorite son of the sub; Starkey. After a thunderous return form with his Civil Music debut, “Orbits,” the Philly bass technician has been busy running things on and off the dancefloor, splitting time between bringing the most refined bass on the planet and being all business with his label, Seclusiasis.

Yet, while he’s always juggling one thing or another in his life, he’s still bringing consistently thunderous music to the forefront, still with that classic dubstep foundation surrounding it all, first and foremost. In this exclusive mix for URB, Starkey exhibits the best of grime, dubstep and off-everything bass music; as he covers the spectrum, from Dexplicit, MRK1 and Rustie; all while crushing it with a plethora of his own tunes. Tracklist down below, please pick your ears off the floor when done.

Enter his latest album, Club Tropicana (released last week on the Fremdtunes label), that seamlessly blends G-Funk, Skweee, jungle, and footwork palettes in a fashion that astonishes and delights to unequivocal appreciation. It’s that penchant for beat-driven mysticism that brought him to making us this mix for URB. When it comes to finding the eeriness and eagerness in between tunes, Cassegrain has it covered.

With their latest release, Tiamat (available this week), the duo sprawl their best work yet, enduringly calling it “master-class techno.” We at URB know that’s the case, which is why we asked them to contribute a mix for our podcast series. To say we’re stunned at how good this is would be a lie; but to say we can’t stop listening to this podcast would be the truth. That damn good. Judge for yourself as you enjoy some top-tier atmospheric techno carnage. Tracklist down below.

This week’s special podcast comes from the mind of Houston-bred, Berlin-based “digital aesthetic” Lōtic. Signed to Brooklyn next-generation electronic label SCI-FI & FANTASY, the 23-year old producer dazzled us here at URB with his two-track scorcher “Sankofa/Glittering”, meshing together elements of ballroom, booming bass, footwork, industrial and experimental drone atmospheres to create a thoroughly unique sonic experience that will charm, confuse and cross dance floors. This is the epitome of “next shit”, people. With that said, Lōtic gave us a quick write-up of this special mix, entitled “The Weighing Of The Heart”; where he carved a path between the sounds of his own productions, his contemporaries, and his #feelings. For real. Check out Lōtic’s words, as well as the track list, down below. Happy hunting.

“The cold, harsh sound of the mix is inspired by the Weighing of the Heart ceremony outlined by the Egyptian Book of the Dead, wherein one’s worth is determined in an instant. When an artist makes genre-defying music, there is a constant measuring of relevance and longevity by the music journalism and opinionated SoundClouder gods. While they could simply ride the day’s trend and celebrate their resulting fame and fortune, the artists featured in this mix express themselves in more genuine ways, risking being ignored or misunderstood and ultimately, the death of a career.”

Well, this is something we have been looking forward to. Initially, when we heard Marc Romboy and Ken Ishii were working together, we laughed at the possibility that both these techno titans would come together for a measly podcast. We couldn’t be happier that we’re wrong, as the Systematic Recordings kingpin and Japanese legend brought URB a tremendous mix that goes between past and present in seamless fashion.

This week’s podcast comes from the Swedish duo of Sally Shapiro. Yes, that’s right, it’s a twosome that consists of Johan Agebjörn and a female singer (who will be referred to as Sally), who’ve made their indelible mark on groove-laden Italo Disco in the last few years, with their previous LPs (Disco Romance in 2007 and My Guilty Pleasure) garnering acclaims from producers, DJs and critics alike.
