I Was At (Not That)

I Was At (Not That)

NYC gets guest appearances on the regular, but us Left Coasters do get it. It's a culture that's probably set up by Hot 97's Summer Jam, the NYC radio station's yearly parade of guest stars and surprise cameos and headline-grabbing antics. Everyone lives and works in the Big Apple while everyone of note comes out here to film. And yet, still...

We show up to Jay-Z and Mary J at the Hollywood Bowl with hopes of some miraculous Dr. Dre cameo. We just barely get Memphis Bleek.

We attend some pre-VMA T-Pain show on a rumor that anybody other than those damn dancing clowns makes a special guest appearance. It's nothing but those damn dancing clowns. No T-Wayne. No T-Kanye. Not even a T-Fat Joe.

Lil Wayne...on the day that The Carter III goes platinum? At the House of Blues on Sunset motherfuckin' Boulevard? His silly guitar skills in hand? We get Baby as the surprise cameo.

Above, on the night we decide to chase tail instead of chasing hip-hop history, there is a guest appearance. T.I. was in town for a MySpace "secret" show and while it sounded awesome, we saw TIP rip apart a similar show for the release of King. It was one of the best shows we've ever seen from the dude. So good, that we figured it'd be safe to skip Friday night's performance...it's not like there would be any surprise guests...

Instead, the crowd was treated to new cuts and some sort of song and dance from Kanye West during the release party for Paper Trail. URB.com will have photos, soon enough, but the only editorializing is that of a bitter man who wasn't there. In the meantime, eskay has a video of the shindig that we just can't seem to embed here.

We hold the doors open for strangers, make sure elevators stay open for late-coming riders, and somehow the karma just ain't there. Somebody owes us. At the next Joe Budden show in LA, we deserve that miraculous guest spot...from Cam'ron or The Game or, fuck it, Tupac Shakur resurrected. We're waiting.
