The Future of Mashups - Live in Portland

Posted Thursday, August 07, 2008 @ 04:29 in Music by Lysette Simmons

Live mashups, as in, a live band doing mashups? Yikes! As a mashups enthusiast, I'm a little pissed at myself for not having thought of this myself. Today, Dave Allen's blog Pampelmoose announced that the Wonder Ballroom in Portland will be hosting a live mashup tribute to the Talking Heads and the Cure. Allen (of Gang of Four) will play bass, Jon Ragel (of Boy Eats Drum Machine) will handle vox / turntable, Benjy Rickard (also of BEDM) on guitar / synth, and Paul Alcott (of Dat'r) will play drums.
There's a free mp3 on Pampelmoose for those who want to hear what a live Aaliyah / Van Halen / Talking Heads / The Cure mashup sounds like. The bassline from "Are You That Somebody" is burning hot, especially with Talking Heads lyrics in the mix. If the show next weekend sounds half as good as the preview track, then we might just see an explosion of live mashup popularity coming out of Portland.
