Chicago promoter ordinance vote postponed

Under pressure from all sides of the local music community, the Chicago City Council postponed yesterday’s vote on the proposed Promoter’s License Ordinance. This victory for independent music might be short-lived however, as the Council’s License Committee plans to revisit the concept of requiring all event promoters to hold a license issued by the city. Chicago Sun-Times rock critic Jim DeRogatis has a nice run down on the movement that caused the delay.

We told you about this issue last week, and last year when the idea for the licenses first sprang up, and while the concept probably can’t be stopped, the Chicago music community seems ready to fight for the best possible licensing requirements. As they were written and prepared for the vote, the licenses would have come with draconian requirements that would have made throwing any sort of show in the city much more expensive and chilled the many thriving independent music scenes making Chicago so much fun these days.

The council plans to revisit the license plan in another month so stay turned for details on the next version of this proposal.
