HARD Summer Festival: A Primer
Perry's opening number was -- as you can hear the last strains of, before he hits the stage -- his live (albeit offstage) karaoke version of "Don't You Want Me, Baby?" to which the audience also sings along. This was preceded by a recording of one of his DJ sets which was fairly heartening -- 'dude loves old disco, which is always cool with me, tho' I was surprised that in one of his mixes he didn't let the soulful vocal of Instant Funk's "Got My Mind Made Up" play, before mixing into another track. 'Always fun to watch this cat, known to his parents as Peretz Bernstein, and admired by many as an example of GUTS...even if is stage moves are a lil' goofy...Last time I saw him was the last Lollapalooza in NYC, where he was climbing a fence backstage and got pulled down by a security guard, unaware of who he was. I intervened and got them to shake hands and took a picture. Since I was broke, I sold the vignette to People magazine, which isn't really what I'm about, but I needed the bread at the time. Sorry, man.
