Sam Sparro is a 25 year old Los Angeles singer/songwriter (originally via Australia then London), and his "Black & Gold" track has been bubbling under the radar for months, but gurgling on the lips of tastemakers all that time - and he's already Top 5 in the UK charts. Sparro plays all the parts and nails it on the blue-eyed soul tip (think Justin Timberlake breast-fed by Chaka Khan), and the original version flows like hot chocolate laced with Cognac. It's what I like to call a "swoon song" - ya hear it, and it swoons your ears and senses. But let's take it all up a notch, and showcase the remix by Phones (aka Paul Epworth, producer of Bloc Party, Futureheads). He leaves in the gorgeous melody and vocal performance, but adds just enough electro-crunchiness to keep the dancefloor pumping.

Sparro's full-length drops April 22nd on Island Records.

Neon Neon feat. Cate Le Bon - I Lust U (Lex Records) (mp3)

This has to be one of my favorite records of the year so far. In case you haven't heard, Neon Neon is a sort of concept project consisting of Bryan Hollon (aka Boom Bip) and Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals singer). With snazzy guest appearances from the likes of Spank Rock, Har Mar Superstar, Fat Lip, and Yo Majesty - plus themes/lyrics based on the illustrious life of car-maker John DeLorean, "Stainless Style" is just about the sleekest, hippest, most shiny mix of futuristic retro you'll hear this century. It was hard to pick a fave track, but this is definitely mine: the very "People Are People" inspired single featuring Gruff and fellow Welsh singer Cate Le Bon trading off vocals. Go buy the full CD - it's worth every penny.

Prince - 1999 (Audiodile Goes Astray remix) (mp3)

Audiodile is an excellent mixer and mashmaker out of the Bay Area who has serious chop 'n cut skills, sometimes known as the "glitch" - where beats and parts get frantically stuttered and looped. For the Purple One's party anthem, he invites in Daft Punk, Dolly Parton, Art Of Noise, and Paul Hardcastle.
