Fillin in the Blanks with Amanda Blank
Top 10 Videos: Nas vs. The Roots
HARD Summer Festival: A Primer
Just in time for the weekend, let's feature some bitchin' mashup tracks.
Here's a nice sampling of some of my favorites out there recently, covering a bunch of genres.
And you get treated to a few of my own creations, too.

DJ Lobsterdust - It's Fun To Smoke Dust (mp3)
This track is pure genius, and loaded with smile factor. And it's almost timely, with all the recent focus on blabbermouth pastors going on. But the religious zealot in this mix dates back to 1982, when Pastor Gary Greenwald had nothing better to do but play vinyl records backwards, listening for messages from Satan himself. The funny thing is, when you play "Another One Bites The Dust" backwards, you actually DO hear the message. Give this a spin to see what it is! Nice moustache, dude...

DJ Magnet - Chicago Bump (mp3)
This one imagines the 70's funk rock of Chicago, with vocals and parts from Amanda Blank, Spank Rock, Bloodhound Gang, Greg Kihn Band and Detroit Grand Pubas. On paper that probably sounds kinda messy, right? Well, inside these grooves, it's just the opposite.
RIAA - Come As The Eighties (mp3)
This mash serves as a musical history lesson, proving just how close in sonics that Nirvana's "Come As You Are" was to Killing Joke's "Eighties." There was even a lawsuit served to Kurt and the boys, which I think was later dropped. Nirvana first claimed they'd never heard the Killing Joke track - until a fan letter written by the teenaged Cobain to Killing Joke was unearthed. D'oh!
Titus Jones - Kiss Britney's Boyfriend (mp3)
This one is pure pop cheese. Even though I pretty much loathe Ashlee Simpson, - and Britney is one meltdown away from a straightjacket - when you pair them both up with Chris Brown (and a smattering of Missy Elliot and Ciara), it makes me wanna dance and sing into a hairbrush.

Here's some of my creations for ya to check out:
DJ Paul V. - Tequila Lip Gloss (mp3)
This track came together in about an hour, inspired by a Cinco De Mayo party last year. I frickin' love Lil Mama and her debut track, and it just flowed so perfectly with the finger-snappin', horny sounds of The Champs. This one always gets my dancefloor stomping around like Pee Wee Herman in white pumps.
BONUS VIDEO MASHUP:
DJ Paul V. - Just Can't Get Club Action (mp3)
Here's another party-starter. I took the "Bagraiders Sailing To Baltimore" remix of the sizzling Yo Majesty track (where they'd already mashed in the Enya parts), did some creative editing, and added the Dirty South remix of the Depeche Mode classic. And those British white boys have never sounded so street.
DJ Paul V. - Phantom On The Bottom (mp3)
One of the great things about Justice, is that most of their tracks are instrumental and just begging to be mashed up. I was lucky enough to find the acapella of The Lady Tigra (formerly 1/2 of L'Trimm "Cars That Go Boom" fame), and her "Bass On The Bottom" jam seemed to fit so smoothly. The "party people" breakdown always gets the kids putting their fists in the air.

And hey, if you're in Los Angeles this weekend, I'd love you to come check out where we drop all these mashups for the dancefloor. It's all happening at BOOTIE LA, which (after 2 years at The Echo in Echo Park) is moving to the much bigger Echoplex. It's a great crowd mix (no bored hipster types in hoodies and Ray-Bans) and you can even score a free mashup compilation CD. Check it all out at BootieLA.com
And this stream below is another mashup of mine. It's my favorite! Give a listen...
Great to have you on the blog, man...cool traxx!
