As the tour turns!
Where we last left off, Dev had missed all possible trains back to London. How would he make his way from the first tour stop of Brighton to Exeter the next day? By jumping in with Patrick Wolf and company and journeying by van. Sounds like a plan, right? Well, it didn't go over quite so easy as the van broke down on the motorway! Making my way up by car alongside Dev's newly appointed driver, we received a call about an hour into our trek telling of their woes. A replacement van was on it's way for them, but would it make in time?
Apparently Patrick Wolf didn't believe so and caught a cab up with his German sound engineer (which ended up totaling £150), leaving behind Dev and Fifi Brown to fend for themselves. For encores, Dev dons a snazzy purple cape, but there wasn't enough wind to lift them out of there—they got a lift from the truck that arrived to tow the idle van, making it to the multi-purpose venue (complete with an art exhibit and cafe) with literally no time to spare. A Lightspeed Champion university radio session had to be abandoned, but Dev was able to do his scheduled interviews at the venue. Doors finally opened an hour past the posted opening time. The show was great - not seated like the church the night prior, but standing which seemed to enliven the audience. The Lightspeed Champion set was similar to the one the night prior - including covers and "No Surprise" alongside other album tracks. For Patrick Wolf's encore, Dev again joined him for "The Magic Position" and then a foray into girl group territory with a rendition of the Spice Girls' current single "Headines." Dev strummed guitar and some quiet vocals as Patrick took lead from behind his piano. The audience was on cloud nine. The merch table was hopping until midnight—so popular that by the end of the evening nearly all Lightspeed Champion merch had sold out—from T-shirts to vinyl.
Now enjoy some sideways video compliments of the internet...
