CMJ 2011: The Hits & Misses

The week-long marathon digested in what was great and not-so great.

Well, it came and went just like that. CMJ 2011 was an interesting marathon of music and events to say the least, sprouting sprinkles of interesting parties, media-sponsored bonanzas that were “too exclusive” for other outlets to cover, and showcases that covered acts in the worlds of hip-hop, indie and trash maybe all too much. While CMJ was business as usual for some media (and of course college radio stations), it provided a very sobering look into how things have changed for the marathon festival. Whether it be the economy or the current musical business climate, CMJ did feel more segmented than ever before. Regardless, there were some definite highlights and lowlights from the fest. Check them out after the jump.

Fallulah Interview

Fallulah is tipped as the next Lykke Li, and she just landed in the U.S. for a set of CMJ shows in New York. Urb caught up with the young Danish singer to chat CMJ, New York and Danish fashion. You’ve got quite a growing fanbase in Denmark and now the U.K., but I’m curious what other countries in Europe you have supporters. What country is the biggest market for you outside of Denmark and England? Fallulah: It’s pretty difficult for me to keep track of it, but I’ve been touring in Sweden and Germany quite a bit, and many Polish, Italian and Czech fans are writing to me asking me to come play shows. I’m being released in France next month too, so lots of exciting things are happening outside of my little Denmark! Have you been to Manhattan before? What are your thoughts on the city in general and what are your biggest hopes for CMJ this week? Fallulah: I lived in New York for 5 months almost 5 years ago when I was attending the Broadway Dance Center, and I’ve visited a couple of times since. The journey I took back then meant a lot to me, and it’s where I decided to finally pursue music.  It’s been far too long since I was last there. It’s my favourite city in the world! I even dedicated a love song to it on my album called “New York, You’re My Concrete Lover.” You seem to have a very keen fashion sense. Who are some Denmark-based designers we need to know about or who are your favorite designers and/or shop(s)? Thanks! I love clothes, but I’m not a fashionista in any sense. I’ve dressed in pretty much the same style for the last 6 years. I like good vintage and upcoming designers. We have some pretty amazing clothes, shoes and jewelry designers in Denmark like Stine Goya, Henrik Vibskov, Line&Jo, Camilla Staerk, Camilla Skovgaard and Peter Jensen. I like to dress in Danish design, but I also like names like Erdem, Carven, Gareth Pugh, YSL and Alexander Mcqueen. One can only dream to afford that stuff, you know. When can American fans who live in cities other than NYC expect to see you live? 2012? Fallulah: I certainly hope so. I’m not signed in the US (yet), but things are beginning to stir, and good things are happening. So I hope to tour the States next year.  The sooner, the better!
