URB’s 10 Must See Acts For Movement-Detroit 2012

Before mega events like Ultra Fest, EDC and Electric Zoo turned EDM into big business (again), a little upstart festival called Detroit Electronic Music Festival (DEMF) denied all of the odds and brought the sounds of techno and house to the struggling metropolis for all to enjoy. Now in it’s 13th year, the gathering renamed Movement continues to buck the trends by offering a unique overview of global electronic music that you won’t find anywhere else in the world. Our performer picks for 2012 aren’t all of the biggest names on the line-up, but give yourself a chance to catch something you won’t find on every other event listing in the world.

MARK FARINA

Perennial favorite Mark Farina has rocked many a dance floor, but for a generation of party kids, his contributions to the after party are just as significant. The DJs Mushroom Jazz series was the soundtrack to many the “morning after,” and virtually became it’s own genre of downtempo, acid jazz, trip-hop and other slow and soulful beats. Don’t miss this rare public performance of tunes the SF legend usually reserves for private playing. (Saturday, Main Stage, 3-5) …MORE

Interview :: Fatboy Slim Gets Ready For EDC New York and Big Beat Bootique

EDM might have exploded across the U.S., covering kids from New York and Miami to Las Vegas and Hollywood, but 2012 isn’t the first time dance music has hit critical mass. It’s been almost 15 years since Fatboy Slim (aka Norman Cook) hit the mainstream with his 1998 hit album, You’ve Come A Long Way, Baby, climbing to the top of the charts while hundreds of thousands of fans danced to “The Rockefeller Skank.”

Today, Cook is as active as ever, playing alongside next generation stars like Diplo and Skrillex at raves and festivals across the globe. And he’s even bringing back his legendary Big Beat Bootique event in his hometown of Brighton—a party that at it’s peak drew 250,000 fans. That’s TWO Electric Daisy Carnivals worth of attendees to hear one DJ. URB spoke with Cook about his upcoming headliner set at EDC New York, and realize that the more things change, the more they rave the same. …MORE

Interview :: Claude VonStroke vs. Justin Martin

In today’s dance music world, it seems like every label is it’s own posse; releasing records, playing parties and overall just hanging tough while traveling the globe. San Francisco house-heads dirtybird Records is no exception. While the group of Claude VonStroke, Justin Martin, Christian Martin, Worthy and J Phlip might not be the first dance music collective to come out of the Bay Area (what up Wicked Crew!), they are certainly the most visible in 2012.

2012 also marks the release of Justin’s debut LP, Ghettos & Gardens, which is chocked full of the sort of fun and quirky house tunes db is best known for. We thought it would be cool to ask his label-mate/partner-in-crime Claude VonStroke to ask Justin a few questions about his new album, but like all friendships, what could have been a one-sided conversation turned into an even and interesting exchange. …MORE

Dave Aju :: Interview

SF producer Dave Aju is no stranger to the experimental. Raised in the Bay Area’s highly progressive culture with a jazz musician father, it’s of little surprise that Aju (real name Marc Barrite) come to electronic music with a taste for the unordinary. What might raise eyebrows is that his first album was composed entirely of sounds made with his own mouth. And his latest release, Heirlooms, was constructed entirely of sounds derived from records and instruments inherited from his late father. From within these conceptual constraints, he crafts deep yet quirky tunes that have been picked up by Circus Company (home to Nicolas Jaar, DJ Koze and dOP) who released Heirlooms last week. And he’s also paired up with house music’s master conceptualist Matthew Herbert for a release on Herbert’s Accidental label later this year. …MORE
