InTheMix Issue 50 Most Powerful People In EDM List

DJ polls are sooooo 2011. The real story in dance music for the past year-and-a-half has been the explosion of business activity that is minting EDM moguls faster than you can say “event driven marketing.”

Which is what makes this list by Australian EDM website InTheMix so revealing. Heck, the website even pegs this article about dance music’s global brand expansions as the start of their own “global brand expansion.”

So who made the list? With the exception of a couple of extremely well-heeled investors, it’s mostly folks who have been at this dance music thing for a long time. So a round of applause is actually in order.

Gramatik Launches Lowtemp Records & Win Free Tickets!!!! (Video & MP3)

Most of the URB staffers got hipped up to Slovenian beatmaker Gramatik’s production prowess somewhere around 2008, with the release of Street Bangers Vol 1.  Fast forward to 2013, and Gramatik has seen over 10 releases, was signed to Pretty Light’s Record Label, and is now launching his own label, simply named Lowtemp.

Forward progress seems to be the name of the game with regards to Gramatik’s career trajectory.  He has long since graduated from the Dilla-infused ‘boom-bap’ sample constructions that exemplified his class of beatsmiths during the late-aughts.  Progress has also seen Gramatik move quickly through the ranks of current producers, pulling influences from all …

All three have had their tracks remixed by Penguin Prison, who’s skilled reinterpretations of original artist compositions have been called “immaculate” in the past. Last year Prison, real name Chris Glover, released a set of twelve original tracks in the form of an EP entitled “Animal Animal/A Funny Thing”, but its still his capacity to crosspolinate genres, and even add that extra kick of energy to his remixes, that keep him on the speed dials of various superstar clientele. Check out a bit of insight that Penguin Prison gave us into his working process. Voodoo Music Experience – Artist in Focus: Skrillex

With the King of Dubstep, Skrillex, closing out the Voodoo Music Experience this Sunday, our friends at Red Bulletin have compiled a list of the top five (non-remix) tracks attributed to said DJ/Producer.  Like him or not, there is no denying that he has helped to merge what was once thought a sub-genre of the EDM scene, he has been detrimental in putting mainstream eyes, not just on Dubstep but on the EDM culture period.

From our friends at Red Bulletin:

5. With You, Friends (Long Drive)

Why? We know, we know… where’s ‘My Name Is Skrillex’ and ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll (Will Take You To The Mountain)’? But ‘With You, Friends (Long Drive), off ‘Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites’ EP is a surprising change of pace, especially off the original.

Check out the video above for this coming Friday’s trip to Heaven’s Gate with Beats in Space honcho Tim Sweeney and special international guests Axel Bowman, Kornél Kovács and Petter Nordkvist of Studio Barnhus. Studio Barnhus is many things – a DJ trio, a record label, a studio on Barnhusgatan (”Orphanage street”) in Stockholm, and they’re poised to bring the heat at Santos Party House this weekend. As a DJ crew, Studio Barnhus has created havoc in dodgy gin joints and blooming warehouses from Budapest and Barcelona to Tokyo and Tlacotalpan. Expect a perfectly organized mess of avant-garde techno/house hits, small but sweet glimpses of pop heaven, “and italo disco b-sides your new boyfriend is too stupid to know about” when Barnhus takes over the booth. To get up to speed, you can check Studio Barnhus’ interview with Resident Advisor here. URB x SOL REPUBLIC | CONTEST & INTERVIEW: Infernal Devices

You know those friends who are ALWAYS trying to turn you on to someone new? Who absolutely adore EVERY note they hear? Well, I’m not that person. Don’t get me wrong. I love and appreciate music, but I’m discriminating. It’s an important characteristic to own when wading through the abyss, sifting through tunes, plucking beauty from obscurity, careful not to drown in what Moby affectionately calls “the grey goo.”

So when I came across Brooklyn duo Infernal Devices and fell head over melodic hooks for the retro-future sound emanating from their Phenomatron, I simply needed to know more. Their music is sexy with a sense of longing and imagination, a nice departure from much of what’s happening on the electronic circuit today, and combines influences ranging from New Wave and Synthpop to French House and Disco.

Squarepusher Announces U.S. Dates With Self-Produced Show

Squarepusher certainly isn’t the first act to up the ante when it comes to his live visuals in recent years. As the arms race for the biggest, baddest, most eye-popping visual experience continues at a cold war pace, leave it to the always obtuse Tom Jenkins to challenge himself and his fans even further. Because while anyone with a decent budget can hire a crack team of animator and designers to create a rock ‘em sock ‘em live experience (and there’s really only a few companies creating this stuff for EVERYONE), Jenkins went and created his own visuals to accompany his Ufabulum album that came out in May on Warp Records, using what he recently referred to as a video synthesizer. Now Squarepusher is bringing his Ufabulum performance to North America, starting with a gig at Montreal’s Piknik Electronik on July 27th.
