HARD Summer Festival: A Primer
Coachella '08: Recapping the Recaps
Everyone who knows me knows I am the biggest Chicago advocate ever. I love my city, I'll probably never live anywhere else. However, despite Chicago's rich and illustrious relationship with electronic music, we've been subject to some pretty unfair legislation, including the much disputed "anti-rave" law of the '90s. A lot of us are now feeling backed into a corner all over again with our city council trying to pass a controversial promoter law.
The Zoo York Institute, New Era, the Harold Hunter Foundation, and the KCDC Skateshop announce the 2nd Annual Harold Hunter Day set for May 17th in New York City. Harold Hunter Day II plans to commemorate Harold’s amazing life with a day of positivity and skate jamming bringing together his native NYC skateboarding scene.
Tomorrow night starts the Jewish holiday of Passover, when the choosen people remember the exodus from slavery in Egypt by eating unleaven bread for eight days. This year's Coachella Festival falls on the final two days of Passover, which leads us to wonder if promoter Goldenvoice will offer matzo for sale or allow some sort of "Bring-Your-Own-Streits" clause at the security gate. I'm sure performers A-Trak, Aesop Rock, Perry Farrell and 1/2 of Chromeo would appreciate the gesture.
Calling him “James Frey with catchy hooks and an American Music Award” those clever snoops at The Smoking Gun have a piece up yesterday blowing the lid on the R&B crooner’s felonious past.
While the “Locked Up” singer loves to play up his storied incarceration for heading up a Gone in 60 Seconds-style car theft ring, his real criminal past includes only a few minor arrests and one five-month stint in a county lock up where he couldn’t make bail but was released when the charges were eventually dropped.
It seems Akon’s “street cred” is all a lie, but in the world of hip hop is that really news. Hopefully we eventually get to a point where an artist’s talent counts for more than his or her background legend.
If you want to know the real deal with Akon, read all about it.
