DaVinci – “What You Finna Do?” (Video)

Once a predominantly black neighborhood with deep jazz roots and streets lined with nightclubs, San Francisco’s Fillmore district has underwent radical changes over the last several decades. Urban redevelopment replaced businesses with low-income public housing, and the streets became wrought with turf wars, drugs and crime. It’s the story of Any Ghetto, USA, except that recent years have seen a spike in gentrification, with many of the area’s longtime residents being pushed out to maintain the city’s glossy, golden image.

DaVinci is one of the last men standing on his block, trying to keep The ‘Moe’s culture alive. In “What You Finna Do?” off his upcoming debut, The Day the Turf Stood Still (available March 9 via SWTBRDS Creative Collective), DaVinci describes the changes like an overnight, zombie-like takeover as he wakes up to black-owned businesses and homes being …

Power Struggle – “Blood of My Heart” (MP3)

Power Struggle, a Bay Area-based hip-hop trio led by Midwest-bred emcee Nomi (formerly of Oddjobs) and a rotating cast of beat technicians, leaks this new joint for Valentine’s Day off their upcoming LP, Remittances. Those familiar with Nomi know his music acts as a conduit for the people, telling stories of working-class laborers, immigrants, revolutionaries and, in this case, lovers. Far from the cheesy-ass shit you’ll no doubt be hearing on this day, this is a powerful dedication to passionate people.

The album, which drops next month on Beatrock Music, features production exclusively by Fatgums (who teamed up with Bambu for last year’s A Peaceful Riot) and Mister Rey (who worked with Denizen Kane on last year’s Brother Min’s Journey to the West), along with vocal assistance from Bambu, BWAN, Kiwi, Pele and others.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Hopie Spitshard – “Yummy” (Video)

San Francisco femcee Hopie Spitshard has what it takes to be the next big superstar–swagger, style, finesse, looks–but she’s got too much integrity to succumb to the rap industry’s sexism to get there. Far from being a hyper-sexualized Nicki Minaj-like Barbie doll, Hopie can spit fierce battle rhymes and trade bars with the best. Despite her petite frame, she stands strong and resolute. Her debut LP, The Diamond Dame, produced entirely by Bay Area beatsmith 6Fingers, is a defiant response to the hollow question, “Where the ladies at?” and features vocal contributions from Del the Funky Homosapien, Bambu and Rocky Rivera. While putting the finishing touches on her upcoming EP, Raw Gems, and getting ready to rock Murs’ Paid Dues Festival in April, she hits us off with a Valentine’s Day treat: her new video, “Yummy,” directed by Patricio Ginelsa of Kid …

We Need More Fashawn – Less Drake (Video)

Fresno, CA rapper Fashawn’s solo debut, Boy Meets World, dropped a day after his 21st birthday. He already had several mixtapes under his belt, toured Europe and appeared on tracks with super producer The Alchemist (who produced Fashawn’s latest mixtape, The Antidote). A fatherless group home kid with a drug addict mother, he could have easily been led astray. Instead, Fashawn tempers his gritty lyrics with uplifting and hopeful messages.
