Von Pea
Pea's Gotta Have It
Released by Interdependent Media
Of the thousands of rappers out there claiming to be hardcore in 2009, few were harder than the hardest of Brooklynati’s hardcore gentlemen, Von Pea. Funny thing is, Mr. Pea isn’t actually all that hardcore. He’s got an alternative mentality, mixed with an updated swagger (oh, how I despise that word). However, it’s his lyrical dexterity that makes his microphone skills hardcore.
Chico Mann
Analog Drift (Muy...Esniqui)
Released by Wax Poetics
It’s always a pleasure when musicians transcend genre boundaries effortlessly. And this is part of what makes Chico Mann’s latest album so enduring. Analog Drift (Muy…Esniqui) is an escape into Brazilian funk, trippy 8-bit electronica (fitting, given the name of the album), reggae, soul, and an utter mishmash of all sort of other delicious flavors. It is this sense of diversity that drives this record to its ultimate success.
Rhode Island-based hip-hop producer Falside unleashed a fantastic mixtape on us this past summer in Jesus Shaves. In fact, he’s steadily been releasing consistently good-great work for quite some time now, providing beats for local emcees such as Poorly Drawn People, and better-known acts such as C-Rayz Walz and Jeru the Damaja. Here we have an impressive – and slightly unsettling (although I’m not entirely sure why) – video for the lead single from Jesus Shaves, “Chocolage Box”. Enjoy.

The Niceguys
The Show
Released by Independently Released
Yes, The Niceguys are based in Houston, but don’t let this fool you; there’s nothing pop-lock-and-droppin’ about this thoroughbred hip-hop crew. The Niceguys make it evident from the title-track opener of their full-length offering, The Show, that this is not going to be an exercise in frivolous nursery rhymes. There is something very genuine about The Niceguys, whose core aim is to entertain and have fun with energetic hip-hop.

Gilles Peterson Presents: Worldwide
Released by BBE
In a way, giving a numerical grade to many of Gilles Peterson’s projects is a bit unfair. Sure he is a terrific composer and producer in his own right, however when it comes to projects such as his latest double-disk compilation, Gilles Peterson Presents: Worldwide, he simply scoured his extensive (understatement) library for many of the most top-quality jams from around the world in celebration of his nearly ten-year-old radio show. That said, there is absolutely no denying the awe of hearing the tracks come together in such a ...
