ACEYALONE and RJD2: So Hip-Hopular

nterview with the Lonely One (By Chris Nunan)

Veteran hip-hop artist and legendary emcee Aceyalone, continues to evolve as an artist and inspire those aspiring to be [artists]. Aceyalone has continued to redefine hip-hop’s guidelines throughout his career. His upcoming album; Aceyalone and The Lonely Ones, does much more than redefine the guidelines. It sets a standard for genre appreciation and creativity. Finding inspiration from: Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound, 60’s girl groups, and a collection of raw funk, Aceyalone along with producer Bionik have composed a masterpiece. This album is sure to bring the listener back to a time when music was a pure art form and not an expendable income. Aceyalone and The Lonely Ones is not just an album; it is a collection of essential sounds to create a work of art. And although this album calls upon music styles and rhythms of the past, Aceyalone still kicks some of the freshest lyrics with astounding skill and precision. To those of you who believe that Aceyalone has stepped away from raw hip-hop; think again, Aceyalone will still serve all wack rappers.

Para One & TTC: First Tango in Paris

Turning French hip-hop on its electronic head, the Institubes crew is preparing to take over the world

By Si Hawkins

PARA ONE REALLY IS QUITE ADMIRABLY FRENCH, EVEN IN THE MOST TESTING of circumstances. It’s 3 a.m. in London’s slightly seedy Kings Cross district, and the Paris-based producer has found himself in the middle of a nu-rave nightmare.  Originally booked to play a nice low-key early set, he’s had a disagreement with the promoter and has been forced to follow frenetic Scottish dance-rockers Shitdisco, which isn’t ideal. Shitdisco’s set is subsequently gatecrashed by fellow indie scenesters the Klaxons, who then indulge in a manic sing-along and proceed to trash the stage while the audience follows suit.

Para deals with this most difficult of situations by getting quite fantastically drunk.  Not that you’d realize this, as he mounts the debris-strewn stage looking a picture of Gallic cool. Narrow of trouser, stylishly side-parted and with a Gauloises hanging elegantly from his …

Beth Ditto: Spreading The Gossip

The Gossip front woman runs D.I.Y. like it was the mid-'90s (Joshua Glazer)

Beth Ditto’s band, The Gossip, might not be a household name, but the openly gay girl from Arkansas and then Olympia, WA, has become a celebrity in her own right. Ditto is dominating the UK tabloids while hanging out with friends like Kate Moss, as her band slowly climbs the music industry ladder with hit remixes and sold-out shows. But this notoriety has come at a cost. While BFF Perez Hilton has championed Ditto’s fierce on-stage performances, much of the tabloid media has focused on her weight and her lifestyle more than her music. It’s a situation not helped by her tendency to undress in public. Which leaves Ditto facing the ultimate challenge, can her D.I.Y. punk credo protect her from the trappings of infamy? URB caught up with Ditto after a manic few days, enjoying a bath in her …

Bad Breath: Gettin’ dirty with Potty Mouth Records (Video & MP3)

Independent Chicago label shakes up the windy city.

By: Jen Boyles

There are two things you can count on when it comes to the current dance music scene in Chicago.  Firstly, “World’s Best Dance Club” Smartbar will always bring in the best artists to play on its unrivaled sound system, and secondly, lanky young Milwaukee export James Amato — the club’s booking agent and new dad to infant label Potty Mouth — will always be wearing his hat curiously cocked to the side. Perhaps the latter is in homage to the rave days, we don’t know. But one thing’s definitely for sure — Amato’s Potty Mouth imprint is finding favor with house fans seeking an updated perspective and is bringing a burgeoning electronic sound called “fidget” to new heights through a bevy of talented producers. Artists …
