Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree Family – Good Children Go To Heaven (Review)

Tahiti Boy and the Palmtree Family

Good Children Go To Heaven

Released by Third Side Records

Just figuring them out can take a few good minutes. Tahiti Boy and the Plamtree Family’s seven piece rock group came to life more than a few miles from white sand beach and Kool-Aid blue surf. The Parisian band at its core provides a center foundation for what is a swirling nebulous of musical creativity with deep roots in France. The members are all involved in other bands and the album, Good Children Go To Heaven features guest appearances from the girlfriend of lead singer “Tahiti Boy” and Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio. Seven members, guests, side projects, fictional names and one remix the Palmtree Family just might yours look normal.

Olive Oil – Space in Space (Review)

Olive Oil

Space in Space

Released by Mule Musiq

Making the crossover to appeal to the English market is a hurdle in the path of many foreign musicians, but Japanese rapper, producer and DJ Olive Oil has a unique approach that speaks to both the power and universality music. Leave the words out, let the instrumentals and break beats do the talking. The opening "Space in Space Intro" starts as a promising jazzy number, a theme that is fairly consistent throughout the length of the disc. The jazz piano seems to be of particular interest to Olive Oil. But he seems to have quite a few interests, in fact the main weakness of the album is there is just too much going on. From Stravinsky samples on the cartoony and hectic “Black Sky Wiz” to Stevie Wonder looping on “B C A E D,” Olive Oil is not content unless every musical genre has had its chance.

Friday Mile – Good Luck Studio (Review)

Friday Mile

Good Luck Studio

Released by Timber Carnival Records

The dueling male and female vocals that ping-pong across the musicscape of Good Luck Studio are quick bursts of pop-rock earworm intertwined with a pushy indie backing trying to keep the record from getting caught on the slippery slope towards mindlessness. The album is the product of Jace Krause and Hannah Williams, who collectively make up Friday Mile, a group whose history reads like the plotline for a hipster daydream come to life: a connection in music theory class, three years of separate direction, a chance re-encounter at a show in Seattle, musical collaboration and the birth of a band. Add in producer Dennis MacKay, who has worked with icons such as Lou Reed and David Bowie, and it seems almost too good to be true. A daydream.

Nickodemus – Sun People Remixed (Review)

Nickodemus

Sun People Remixed

Released by ESL Music

February brings with it the gloom of winter. The holidays have come and gone, the snow is no longer entertaining or beautiful, an oversized rodent becomes a momentary oracle that will hopefully tell of an end to a season that has overstayed its brief welcome. A musical relief from the doldrums comes from Brooklyn DJ Nickodemus whose cover artwork alone looks as though it could combat a tough case of S.A.D. Nickodemus didn’t skimp when it came to remixing the songs from his second album, Sun People. By incorporating artists from around the globe Nickodemus has added legitimate world music names to an album with a world music vibe.

Scanners – Submarine (Review)

Scanners

Submarine

Released by DIM MAK

A quick glimpse at the track listing from the Scanners second album Submarine could have people wondering if somewhere between their 2006 release Violence is Golden and today the London based group grew sick of the rock and roll lifestyle and abandoned it for born-agains and Bible study. “Jesus Saves.” “Salvation.” “Halfway Home.” It reads like the set-list from a Saturday night concert at Liberty University. But Matthew Mole, Sarah Daly, Amina Bates and Tom Hutt have no intentions of preaching like holy rollers or evangelizing fire and brimstone; although, ...
