Fatlip & Yeti Beats: Channeling Funky Ghosts

For Fatlip, the females that reside under Los Angeles’ nostalgic sun have always been on some Great-White-Whale steez. It began with the Pharcyde’s legendary “Passin Me By”, an anthem oozing with hopeless romanticism; Then, on Labcabincalifornia’s “She Said”, Fatlip continued to find himself stranded on a lonely island where the forecast was always platonic; Fatlip’s solo venture yielded Lip’s jarringly candid “What’s Up Fatlip?”, where he admitted that he possessed virtually none of his rap-music prerequisites. Now, alongside versatile producer/wingman Yeti Beats, the Pharcyde alum is again on the trail of the almighty and elusive L.A. tigress.

Johnny Spanish-Up in the Clouds (MP3)

Efficiently mingling croonability(Yes, I proclaim that “croonability” is a word) and ill wordplay is a dynamic that is not often carried out effectively. Swatting that trend is Johnny Spanish whose new banger “Up in the Clouds” is sure to make wonderful milkshakes made from testosterone and estrogen. He also calls both Louisville(country) and Brooklyn(uber-urban) home: equilibrium be thine name, Johnny Spanish be thine name.

Paper Route x Diplo x Men Without Hats (MP3)

If Diplo was to somehow come into possession of a Delorean or a phone booth or some other time-traveling vessel and then go back in time–twenty eight years–and explain to the band Men Without Hats that he was going to extrapolate a sample from their insanely infectious opus “The Safety Dance”, and glue a thumping bass line onto it while a crew of Alabama rappers toasted to life in the fast lane, their minds would have been blown.

However, manipulating the space-time-continuum for the sake of blowing the minds of Men Without Hats would have changed the course of time and we may not have Paper Route’s new banger “Stop N Go. I would, however, like to see if the Montreal-based band digs PRGz and Diplo’s usage. …

Reef the Lost Cauze: Gloves Off

For some reason, the concept of Philadelphia-rap music makes me feel cold all over(sans the jovially-neon Fresh Prince–though even he departed for sunny Bel-Air). Perhaps it’s the town’s deeply-rooted Protestant work ethic or maybe it’s a manifestation of populist pride against New York City’s glitz, but in a genre that revels in showcasing the ascension from poverty to posh, guys like Freeway, Beanie Sigel and Black Thought have always given off the impression that they’re proud to remain scrappy. Certainly no exception to said-zeitgeist is Reef the Lost Cauze whose latest offering, Fight Music, hears the Philly-MC clawing through producer, Guns-n-Butter’s murky beats with domineering confidence. However, as frosty as Reef’s lyrical right-hooks are, he warmly shines some light upon his hometown as well as things that make him laugh and …

Ratatat-LP4 (Review)

Ratatat

LP4

Released by XL Recordings

The rapport between the timbres that comprise the catalogue of Ratatat is a tightly-knit and exclusive bond. Having had three albums and two grassroots remix collections to do so, on LP4 it should only seem logical that the guitars and synthesizers seem to know each other better than ever. Roaring together in collaboration, this dynamic is perhaps best manifested on "Bob Gandhi" where Evan Mast's atmospheric beats set the table for Mike Stroud's guitar to emerge and gracefully destroy all of the fine china. The galactic romp, "Drugs" is ...
