Bot'Ox
Babylon By Car
Released by I'm A Cliche Records
Somewhere between the French electronica of Daft Punk and the nostalgia of Kraftwerk sits the intriguing sound of Bot'Ox. A collaboration from Benjamin Boguet (alias Cosmo Vitelli) and Julien Briffaz (half of Tekel), Bot'Ox plays like a love letter to the golden ages of New Wave and late 90s electronic music.
The Chemical Brothers
Further
Released by Astralwerks
The Chemical Brothers rode the Big Beat wave of the late 90s to mainstream success, but while other groups (we're looking at you Prodigy) have become less relevant, Tom Rowlands and Ed Simons have managed to keep up with the times while staying true to their sound. Eclecticism has always been the strength of the Chemical Brothers and with their seventh studio album Further they continue to develop musically. Finding a comfortable balance between hard beats and folk influences, Further includes some of the best material from this duo in years.
Hybrid
Disappear Here
Released by Distinctive Records
Mike Truman and Chris Healings have been making music as Hybrid since the late 90s. For their 2010 release Disappear Here they have added the talents of singer/songwriter Charlotte James to the fold. If you are familiar with Hybrid's music, then you know what to expect. A mish-mashof breakbeat sounds fused with an orchestral vibe, Hybrid make electronica that is rather high brow. Disappear Here delivers on that front: the music is rather pretty and well produced yet somehow remains a bit dull.
Capping off a busy weekend that including a headlining stint at SoCal massive rave Beyond Wonderland and a sold out show at Hollywood’s Henry Fonda Theater, Groove Armada decided to host a free intimate gathering at the newly opened W Hotel in Hollywood. Word was spread via a few select email lists and tastemakers, that is until the duo announced the “secret” show on KCRW the morning of March 22. A flood of RSVPs came in from loyal fans not willing to drive to San Bernadino or shut out of the sold out show. Yet despite the drama, this showcase of both the immense talent of Groove Armada and the new center of Hollywood, remained an intimate affair.
