Live Review: Flammable Liquid 20-Year Anniversary Reunion

Twenty years.  Good God.  Has it really been twenty years?  Has it really been two decades since Flammable Liquid, L.A.’s most beloved of all old-school rave after-hours, began blazing its historic trail and setting the city’s nocturnal underground alight?  Have the ones who’ve been there from the beginning really gotten that much older?  And can that magical vibe from all those years ago be resurrected in this second decade of the twenty-first century?  Well, yes, yes, yes, and YES, respectively, as this 20th-year reunion party proved on this cool September night.  Even as Nocturnal Wonderland  raged far away in San Bernardino to tens of thousands, the several hundred who were at Flammable Liquid laughed at the mere idea of going all the way out there for yet another by-the-numbers massive.  There was no fucking way they were going to miss …

Christopher Lawrence/SuZie del Vecchio video shoot

The Playhouse in Hollywood, besides being host to the now near-legendary Bud Brothers Monday Social (14 years & counting!), also from time to time has served as the site for music video shoots.  Perhaps the most famous example was Tiesto’s highly-publicized set late last year.  Well, unlike that night, the house was cleared for this new video, for the upcoming Christopher Lawrence single “A Little Rush”.  Hopped up, pumping and unapologetically high-energy, “A Little Rush”s glistening synthetic beats are complemented by the lush vocals of singer SuZie del Vecchio.  If that latter name doesn’t sound familiar to you, it no doubt will soon, as del Vecchio’s recent collaboration with Paul Oakenfold, “Mesmerized”, has already been remixed by Adam White, Mark Lewis, Swedish Egil, Hirofumi Ohta and Anthony Garcia, among others, and is expected to be released soon by Oakenfold on …

Live Review: War Of The Roses (Funky Techno Tribe Reunion) (4.10.2010)

Lot 613, for those of you not yet familiar with it, is one of the hot artist complex spaces in downtown Los Angeles that has played host to several multimedia parties over the past year or so.  Nestled in near the L.A. River, just off the 6th Street bridge, the place has an airy industrial atmosphere to it, so typical of the many spaces in the slowly reviving areas that lie outside of the upward-thrusting downtown skyline, where entrepreneurs have been renovating the old wasted buildings, converting them into lofts, cafes, small businesses and art studios.  Far away from the mainstream Hollywood scene, and just dingy enough to maintain its underground credibility, 613’s relatively distant locale ensures that infiltration by poseurs and wannabes is highly unlikely for the time being.  Thus, it’s an ideal location for electronic music events that …

Club Review: DECOR opening night @ Henry Fonda Theater, L.A. (3.20.2010)

What happens when you open up a new club and you don’t even show up for the opening?  That question was probably on the minds of more than a few who attended the premiere night of Décor, Insomniac’s latest foray into Saturday night Hollywood entertainment.  After all, the local nightlife media had been hyping up the fact that this new club would be going head-to-head with its former business partner Giant, which had bolted from Vanguard and re-settled in its old Avalon digs.  So where was Pasquale Rotella, the founder and driving force behind Insomniac?  Well, that was no secret; he was a good hour away in San Bernardino, throwing the much-touted Nocturnal Festival at the Orange Show the same night….a handy way to duck the petty ridiculousness of L.A. clubbing politics, to be sure.  Of course, when you have …
