Think Chuck Klosterman, but less white.
"You might as well not ask him for no free pub, capisce?"

While most heads would agree Madlib is nearly above reproach (at least production wise), there are many that simply cannot feel the deadpan raps of Detroit’s Guilty Simpson, despite being signed to Stones Throw now for nearly four years. The forthcoming release of OJ Simpson (May 18, Stones Throw), an album entirely produced by The Beat Konducta, may go a long way to solidifying Guilty as one of the underground’s most gifted syllable-bending storytellers. …MORE
And the award for most ignorant (and perhaps poetically just?) song of the moment goes to…? Yes, the man with quite possibly the worst handle in rap history, Waka Flocka Flame. Granted this song was recorded some time last year after the impact of the somehow-catchy monstrosity “O Let’s Do It.” While digital ink should not be wasted on such gun-glorifiers, it’s hard to find a more satisfyingly mean-muggish song right now. Oh, don’t forget Mr. Flocka was shot earlier this year.

Better than you thought. A poignant phrase from the hook on the first feel-able joint from Long Islanders Folk & Stress. Right after a pitch-perfect intro lift from Woody Allen’s Manhattan, a polished knock from Folk impresses the eardrums. I have seen these kids perform twice, not at all by choice. They opened for GZA on his Philly Liquid Swords tour stop and I tolerated them opening for Black Milk at CMJ ‘08. Co-signed by both The Genius and Dreddy Kruger, CEO of Think Differently Music, on whose imprint F&S’ debut The Box will drop sometime in the Spring or Summer. While their style of dress tends toward the hipster (see banner above), there is nothing Asher Roth about this cut or their musical approach, this is serious rap business no matter if they summered in the Hamptons or not. …MORE
Welly welly welly well. The boys from Dueham are back with the first single from their last album as Little Brother (where have I heard this one before, Jiggaman? Brett Favre?). OK, yeah LeftBack (April 20 drop date) is likely the last salvo from everyone’s favorite underground siblings, but it is hard to take any rap crew at their word when it comes to the R-word. While 9th Wonder is long since over the hills and far away, his stylistic nephew, Khrysis, does the honors here and will produce over half the album. The word underwhelming would never apply to the LBs but this track does not exactly set the world on fire. It does seem to grow on you though.

It wasn’t that type of show. That’s what this pressman (minus a press pass) overheard near the capacity bar. It was Pete Rock on the wheels warming up the crowd. Then De La Soul for a long, bizarre set. Then mighty Mos Def clad in garish garb commandeering the limelight in self-indulgent fashion, Slick Rick in tow. Another wrinkle in time in Philadelphia, a city that recently withstood two crippling blizzards in less than a week. A city trying to thaw, a country teetering on the edge of double-dip recession. An awkward moment for a sold-out true school party. Thursday night to boot, not quite the weekend. …MORE
