Instant Rotation, February 2012: Malkovich, Homeboy Sandman, Hectic Zeniths, Quelle Chris

2012 is sinking in. The European Soccer Championships & The Olympics in London. If we make it to the Summer that is. The future is all up in your face. A colossal political cage match this November in the U.S.Pay. Some cats are going hard without pause, as the kids would say. Super based. Sprinting at the finish line. A whole lot of bills of goods are being sold daily. Still we toast to some less-heralded Primo Quarto champs. …MORE

Gangrene, Vodka & Ayahausca (Review)

Gangrene

Vodka & Ayahausca

Released by Decon

Let's talk drug of choice. Hip-hop has generally gravitated toward alcohol & marijuana with the occasional foray into hallucinogenics and nose candy (simply reference Raekwon's OB4CL, pretty sure there's a few tracks where Ghost & Rae are snorting in the booth). These days hip-hop's medicine cabinet houses anything from adderall (Danny Brown eats them like TicTacs) to molly to cups of promethazine. Gangrene (Alchemist & Oh No) are here to introduce the South American alternative to absinthe, an apparently delightful little cocktail named Ayahausca.

Whatever you did, here’s a few songs you might not have heard this year, because clearly you suck:

The Away Team, Scars & Stripes (Review)

The Away Team

Scars & Stripes

Released by IWWMG/Jamla/Duckdown

North Carolina might have saved hip-hop for a year or two (too bad that was circa 2003 or 2005 depending on your entry point). Khrysis is one of the best producers of the Fruity Loops era. That compressed sound was made for the digital generation and is still easy on the ear when done right. 9th Wonder & Khrysis are descendants of the Native Tongues, that was clear from the outset, why else would the marquee group of their movement be called Little Brother. But the cast on the fractured in-between has to be Da Beatminerz' crackling sound which kept the Boot Camp Clik on the borderline of backpack and blackjack; an export that worked exceedingly well with the Hall Of Justus massive's burgeoning endeavors.
