The Whigs – In the Dark (Review)

The Whigs

In the Dark

Released by ATO

Georgia’s The Whigs give their hard-charging, garage rock a bit of a melodic revamp on their third album, In The Dark. Producer Ben H. Allen, who has twiddled knobs for Gnarls Barkley and Animal Collective, is credited with furnishing the trio with some artistic wiggle room in the form of more peppy, syncopated rhythms. “Hundred/Million” kicks off the album with the dance-floor ready thump of Julian Dorio’s drums, backed by the incessant grind of Tim Deaux’s bass and Parker Gispert’s plucky vocals. “Black Lotus” channels The Killers' brand of frisky, pop-rock and the beat stays revved-up through the lovelorn lyrics of “So Lonely.”

Ninjasonik Promises “Bizarre Sounds” (Video)

Their party-startin’ jams and predilection for rowdiness is legendary in circles where tight pants and guzzling Sparks is de rigueur. Since debuting in 2007, Ninjasonik has been careening towards indie greatness with a punchy brand of hilarious, hyped-up music that has left scores of pumped-up fans – and a few grouchy proprietors – in its wake. The crew of rapper Telli “Bathroom Sexxx” Gramz, DJ Teenwolf, and Reverend McFly, has rocked venues from reckless loft parties to the Whitney Museum. Their sly ode to skinny jeans pride, “Tight Pants,” was a viral hit and mixtapes like Ninjasonik Mix #1, #2 and #3, and Darth Bano have been snapped up by their increasingly rabid fanbase. They’ve collaborated with fellow troublemaking Brooklynites Matt & Kim and Japanther, and carved a space in NYC nightlife with their now-defunct Wednesday night residency at the Lower East Side bar Happy Ending.

Fan Death – A Coin For The Well (Review)

Fan Death

A Coin For The Well

Electro duo Fan Death sparked blogosphere buzz in 2008 with the hearty throwback thump of the single “Veronica’s Veil.” On the group’s debut EP, A Coin For The Well, artists Dandi and Marta serve up more hip-rattling new-wave and cut a groovy swatch of slinky neo-disco. Lifting their name from a Korean urban legend about the potentially fatal nature of sleeping with a fan in the room, the ladies of Fan Death are not playing around on “Power Surge,” a retro dance floor anthem which bubbles over with earnest, breathless lyrics and the urgent whine of disco violins.
