In New York with nothing to do today? Shady Records is throwing themselves a party at the BRISK Bodega pop-up shop, featuring the label’s memorabilia and a special show with Yelawolf and Slaughterhouse later tonight. “The exhibit is a one-day-only experience celebrating Shady’s history and evolution to Shady 2.0,” the label said in a release. “Featuring exclusive artwork by Tristan Eaton and ARTEKNYC, the Brisk Bodega will give you up close and personal access to some extremely rare and never-before-seen gems from the Shady Records museum of memorabilia, including the puppet and set from Eminem’s Brisk “Claymation 2.0″ Super Bowl commercial earlier this year.”
From now until 5 pm, the pop-up shop, located at 159 Bleecker St., will feature memorabilia from 8 Mile, plaques from classic albums …
We know Labor Day is a time for laziness; that day where you can sleep late, eat nachos for breakfast and thank your local union that you don’t have to think about work for one extra day. But given the lineup, we have to co-sign the big Day Off thrown by Fool’s Gold (the label, not the band) on Monday, September 5. Three 6 Mafia co-founder Juicy J, au courant Detroit rapper Danny Brown and producer/DJ extraordinaire Just Blaze headline a free day of music in New York. FREE!
The label has also promised special, unannounced guests, which might sound like a ploy but keep in mind the last “special guest” they brought out. So yeah. Get off your couch. Put the nachos down. Go. Flyer after the jump.

Every summer since 1980, the Montreal Jazz Festival has given millions of people the opportunity to take in thousands of acts ranging from the biggest musicians in the world to that girl at Starbucks in the weird xylophone blues drum ‘n bass group. Last month, the city attracted more than 2.5 million visitors to check out 3,000 artists from 30 countries.
With music playing nonstop from noon to midnight at 10 free outdoor stages and an additional 10 concert halls, only the most curmudgeonly and elitist of your friends will find something to bitch about at this festival. And contrary to the name, countless genres besides jazz are represented, as our list of our 10 favorite acts shows.
Hip-hop titans and corporations have long flocked to each other for increased mutual brand recognition. Cristal painfully learned that you don’t piss off a major demographic, but for every cautionary tale, there are many more partnerships that actually work. Last night, URB checked out the launch of Qream, the latest partnership between liquor giant Diageo and Pharrell Williams, at the New York Public Library Cynics that we are, we were expecting a bottle stamped with the imprimatur of Williams; the type of deal where name means more than brain and the rapper can quickly snag the easiest check of the year. What we got was an impassioned speech by Williams, who is either the most invested producer in liquor or the greatest BS artist ever. …MORE
New York City is not supposed to be this hot in May. Inside Bowery Ballroom Wednesday night, as a packed crowd awaits the New York debut of UK bluesy art pop singer Anna Calvi, the air conditioning is off and people are visibly sweltering. As the water and beer flow in equal measures, Calvi, bathed in dim light and swaths of smoke, begins a slow, eerie guitar riff. It’s a bluesy, swampier version of Angelo Badalamenti — imagine “Twin Peaks” as filmed in Mississippi — and suddenly, the oppressive heat seems like an appropriate, if not essential, part of the show.
