Jared blinked a few years back and became a photographer. He is still unsure if this was a painful accident or beautiful stroke of luck. Having spent the last 7 years working behind the scenes shooting djs in an effort to document the rise of club culture and the dj he has seen quite a few dance floors around the world. In his search he came across some amazing faces in the music such as Ron Carroll, Chris Samba, Louie Vega, Kaskade, Mfr, Dj Spinna, Robert Owens, The Rogue Traders, Kraftwerk, The Gorrilaz, Ben Watt and Chris Lum to name a few. Occasionally he has been able to corner a vocalist or two such as Kenny Bobien, Ultra Nate, and Barbara Tucker. All of them have left an indelible mark on him and his lens which has kept him going despite the early morning plane flights, late night taxis and empty wallets. I doubt he would trade any of it for the world. So when he is not writing for URB he is most likely stuck on a plane or hiding behind his camera in some dark club somewhere, anywhere in the world good dance music can be found. Birthdays, Beats & Rob Fernandez – The King of NYC

If you have ever hit a club in NYC chances is are Rob Fernandez helped make that memorable night happen in some capacity.  URB recently sat down with Rob on the heals of Pacha’s 5th birthday and his impending birthday bash to discuss all things celebratory in and about the New York nightlife.  If you are unfamiliar with who Rob is we won’t hold that against you… even though he has taken home multiple Dancestar & Club World Awards for his events in the last three years not to mention the last two decades.  He’s not one to bask, too much, in the spotlight.  If that weren’t enough he also has a few other accolades under his belt, most notably “New Yorker of the Year”, not an easy feat in Gotham City.  So a big thanks to the man for giving us his time to take a hilarious look back as well as a a positive glance at the future for electronic music in the US.  Make the jump after the interview for a little present and info from Rob should you be headed or in the NYC area.

Booka Shade Unleash Their Sound on Brooklyn

If you live outside of New York or Los Angeles there is a good chance that you may not have had a high amount of exposure to the Booka Shade sound.  They first came to our shores from their native Berlin in 2005 only to be told that they stood little chance due to the lack of electronic music in the American diet.  Since that time they have most definitely done their part to help change that.

Roger Sanchez Takes 5 with URB (Video)

Roger Sanchez kicked off his Stealth Live Tour last night in Washington D.C. and from what we have heard it was pretty dope, but then would you expect anything less from Mr. S?!  Lucky for us we got to catch up with him before he left for his thoughts on the tour and just where house music is heading in the US.  Make sure you get out and check this tour as it can be hard to catch him in the US at times due to his plethora of bookings and residencies around the globe.  Roger is not to be missed, hit the video after the jump for the tour’s full line up and dates!

Dance.Here.Now…. A Full Frontal House Assault (Photos)

Last night Joshua Glazer, aka URB’s Editorial Guru and LA DJ, was in NYC.  I was supposed to catch up with him at Baddies ripping the decks up with Nancy Whang of LCD Sound System.  Supposed to.  Look, I packed the camera, my ears were on and I was ready.  The problem was I had to make one stop into Cielo and the weekly Dance.Here.Now. gig to wish a good friend happy birthday.  Sounds fair right?  It was, until Dance.Here.Now. and Boris decided to pull out all the stops.  It was carnage of the highest order in house music, a veritable Winter House Olympics for Cielo’s Funktion1 sound system.  ”How am I gonna explain this Josh” I thought?  I made it to Baddies promptly at 3:38 am and he was gone of course.  So Josh, I’m Sorry.  I hope you and our lovely readers will make the jump to see my photographic apology.

Jean-Michel Basquiat’s New Film and Footage – The Radiant Child (Video)

Jean-Michel’s rise and fall has to be categorized as one of the greatest and worst points of the 1980’s.  Had he continued on in his life and career he would have surely been been America’s first and most prominent black artist.  But he didn’t and SAMO is gone forever left only to live on in the few photos and moving images that we have of him.  Thankfully there are people like Tamra Davis to remind us.

Tamra was a close friend of Jean’s and had been compiling footage of the artist at the time of his death.  What she amassed on the celluloid were interviews, rarities, and behind the scenes peeks into Jean-Michel Basquiat’s life.  When he died she put them all away, no one ever saw the footage.  Fast forward 20 years and she finally decided …
