Jake One: Pro’s Tools

Kids wearing “Listen To Dilla” shirts who just got their first MPC dream of the career Jake One’s having. Out of Seattle’s late ‘90s hip-hop scene, he’s worked with all types and degrees of MCs; essentially, most anyone who’s caught wind of his beats. Big names 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes; to indie-cats Casual, Gift of Gab, Slug; to legends like De La and Dre. He just made tracks for Snoop, which he’s hoping will see the light of day, as is a cut on De La’s upcoming album, and DOOM is currently still sitting on some beats. Same with Bun B, Raekwon, M.O.P., the list is impressive as it is long. Meanwhile Jake is pushing his latest effort, another project on Rhymesayers. Along with the clever packaging, The Stimulus Package, shows Jake piecing together soulful, versatile joints for …

The Minimal Wave Tapes – Volume One (Review)

Various Artists

The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume 1

Released by Stones Throw

It's really no great surprise that hip-hop heads are moved by no-wave. The aesthetics of late '70s early '80s punk tangents parallel hip-hop in many ways--the basic music structure, wayward ethos, lo-fi sounds, thick drums, and DIY approach are all obvious overlaps. With recent releases from hip-hop based imprints, and with current producers exploring the genre, it's fitting that Stones Throw tossed their hat in the ring with this weird, dark release.  If you're unsure, peep their Minimal Wave Podcast for a taste. It's not for everyone, but it's one of the most unique projects of this ...

2 Turntables and a Microphone: The Life and Death of Jam Master Jay

Released by Image Entertainment

When Jam Master Jay was killed in 2002, many knew that an iconic DJ had died.  Many knew that he was part of revolutionary rap group RUN DMC; some might’ve even known Jay was short for Jason.  What Two Turntables and A Microphone offers is a unique look of hip-hop history through Jason Mizell’s work, showing that he wasn’t just DMC's third member, but the driving force behind the group in many ways.  This film is mad respectful and is probably the only RUN DMC documentary told through the narrative of ...

Best of ‘09 : A Soul Centric Review (URB writer David Ma)

The best part of what I do is all the music I get to listen to; the worst part is all the music I have to listen to.  And yes, there were plentiful letdowns this year.   Sure, you have your Phoenix, your Jay-Z, your Yeah Yeah Yeahs, your Gaga– all huge artists whose work was really really solid.  But they, and a few more, were largely in the minority in ‘09.

Besides all the boring,  trend-chasing releases, there were moments of triumph and originality.  These projects, perhaps niche or weird, do show that smarts and musicianship can still prove successful.  These artists lacked MTV airplay, features in Rolling Stone, and major radio support, but  the actual music, unlike this year’s trite hits, will likely age well in the coming years.

As I sink deeper in age (and curmudgeonism), I find myself sucker-punched by music with one commonality: Soul.  Heartfelt songs that get you in the gut can’t be denied.  Here are solid releases that, for one reason or for many, struck me hard in ‘09.   …MORE

Redman: Dare Was a Darkside

Reggie Noble AKA Redman Shares History, Album Details, and Where he Got the Best Weed

By David Ma

“Now, you know you don’t own a Benz / Yes, I do and chrome’s the trim,” says Redman to himself on “Redman Meets Reggie Noble,” a track off his 1992 debut, Whut? Thee Album.  Even then, he drew a line between himself and Redman, a boastful blunt smoking, gun-toting rap character who’s nothing like Reggie (besides the blunt smoking part).  17 years later, his new album Reggie Noble 9 ½ furthers this distinction and caps a career that’s made him known in the world of both rap and entertainment.
