5 Questions With Mayer Hawthorne

Blue-eyed soulja Mayer Hawthorne recently hit the road in support of his new joint, How Do You Do.  The former DJ-turned crooner (turned Vince Vaughn look-a-like) has worked with random acts while doing all sorts of TV spots after his 2008 single “Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out” pushed him toward stardom.   He’s since worked with Snoop Dogg, collaborated with Ed Banger Records, and was name checked by ?uestlove.   His career is in full swing— his new project has the markings of old Motown but touches of modern slang and even some boogie.   His vintage suits, nerdy glasses and compositions have made him a darling within the industry as well as with fans who flock to catch him live with his band, The County.

URB quickly caught up with Mayer in early December while he and his posse were (literally) on Broadway, celebrating news of their upcoming gig on Letterman.  Given his hectic schedule, Mayer made time for a quick Q&A with URB. …MORE

Atmosphere’s Top 10 Tunes

2011 marks Atmosphere’s 18th year of repping Minneapolis hip-hop (and sad backpacker boys worldwide), and we’re still excited to hear new music coming from Slug and Ant. The duo are dropping their sixth album, The Family Sign, on April 12, and gave us the first taste, “Just For Show,” last night. So it seemed like a good time to look back on nearly two decades of Atmosphere’s best tunes. Consider it a primer of the young’uns, and a refresher course for the old heads. …MORE

Devin the Dude (Interview)

The Village Voice called Devin, “An asshole in the tradition George Clinton or Rudy Ray Moore, a shit-talker who thinks yukking and fucking is a life plan”. Granted, weed and big butts aren’t entirely all Devin “The Dude” Copeland talks about. But for the span of 5 albums (and a new 6th) his everyman approach has endeared him on both coasts as well as overseas—notably, all without radio play. …MORE

Jake One: Pro’s Tools

Kids wearing “Listen To Dilla” shirts who just got their first MPC dream of the career Jake One’s having. Out of Seattle’s late ‘90s hip-hop scene, he’s worked with all types and degrees of MCs; essentially, most anyone who’s caught wind of his beats. Big names 50 Cent and Busta Rhymes; to indie-cats Casual, Gift of Gab, Slug; to legends like De La and Dre. He just made tracks for Snoop, which he’s hoping will see the light of day, as is a cut on De La’s upcoming album, and DOOM is currently still sitting on some beats. Same with Bun B, Raekwon, M.O.P., the list is impressive as it is long. Meanwhile Jake is pushing his latest effort, another project on Rhymesayers. Along with the clever packaging, The Stimulus Package, shows Jake piecing together soulful, versatile joints for …

The Minimal Wave Tapes – Volume One (Review)

The Minimal Wave Tapes Volume 1

Released by Stones Throw

It's really no great surprise that hip-hop heads are moved by no-wave. The aesthetics of late '70s early '80s punk tangents parallel hip-hop in many ways--the basic music structure, wayward ethos, lo-fi sounds, thick drums, and DIY approach are all obvious overlaps. With recent releases from hip-hop based imprints, and with current producers exploring the genre, it's fitting that Stones Throw tossed their hat in the ring with this weird, dark release.  If you're unsure, peep their Minimal Wave Podcast for a taste. It's not for everyone, but it's one of the most unique projects of this ...
