Seems like the name Odd Future has been on the tongue of every rap vet and industry tastemaker for the past 6 months or so. Let’s think about that word for a second — tastemaker — before reflecting on the sheer tastelessness of the subject matter that these young teens from the west coast have chosen to be their microphone M.O.
Although we can’t lie, who doesn’t enjoy some good tales of rape, pillaging, suicide, and grisly murder every now and then? Charismatic and clever as Odd Future may be — specifically the group’s frontman, Tyler the Creator — any real hip-hop head knows damn well that neither he nor his cohorts are the first to stake their claim in the shadowy terrain of the horrorcore sub-genre. Perhaps the only thing truly bothersome about Odd Future’s …
One of So Cal’s finest gives us a sneak peek at his latest. Judging from the line-up, the live sax, and the snippet we get to hear from the video, this one sounds serious. Thankfully, Jay’s manager has informed me that the full song should drop later this week.
A sneak look at a recent late-night studio session in Atlanta, where some talented artists got together for some shit talking, drinking and most importantly, MUSIC MAKING. In Illecism’s case, anime seems to be his muse of choice. With Molotov for example (his last mixtape release of 2010), he even chose to piece together clips from some of his favorites for the full-length accompanying video. For the uninitiated, the main sources for the visuals boil down thusly: Kite, Ninja Scroll, Mezzo Forte, and Akira.
Keep that last one in mind.
The film follows the story of Tetsuo, a bullied teenager who suddenly discovers an awesome power source that gives him superhuman abilities. It’s a film that Illecism likes to have on in the background during his home recording sessions — and it happened …
Before going to see Philly Slick perform there the previous Friday, I’d never been to the place before. But I have to say that it’s one of Philly’s doper new spots — even though it’s location in University City seems to unfairly stereotype it as your typical college sports bar. I can definitely see it becoming a magnet for underground talent after it’s gotten a little more room to breathe and build it’s reputation. The So Motivational Tour couldn’t have picked a better spot to launch.
