Lights, Camera, Action! – Paul van Dyk Talks New Video & Stage Set

It’s been two years since I last interviewed German dance mogul Paul van Dyk and in that time, he’s released his best of album, developed a new tour with intricate stage and light design to compliment his DJing and has his sixth studio album coming out called Evolution. You get the sense that he’s mentally a shark – never able to stop swimming. Then again, it’s this undying passion and drive that’s earned him everything from a Grammy nomination to consistent upper rankings in DJ Mag’s top 100 list. We were able to snag some time with him to chat about conceptualizing the new tour and album, dubstep vs. moombahton and the moment he felt like he made it. …MORE

Dimitri From Paris Talks New “Knights Of Playboy” Mix (MP3)

Disco is dead. Say that to this artist and you might find yourself learning a little music history 101. Dimitri from Paris is considered disco’s top brass – a champion of the classics, forgotten dusty gems and modern disco influence since he began DJing over twenty years ago. Not only a figurehead for the genre, Dimitri has also become the force behind the Playboy DJ mixes. The newest is “Knights of Playboy” on Defected, a double release with Bob Sinclar featuring the likes of Tensnake and Darryl Pandy. Here, the real life Playboy explains disco’s impact throughout the years, inspirations for the newest mix, and yes…what Hef’s mansion is really like. …MORE

Chris Lake Talks New Album

I admit, when celebrated house producer Chris Lake picks up the phone I’m slightly nervous. After all, I’ve bought his records for years and even played out several of them enough times that the vinyl is worn enough to skip. He immediately puts me at ease, apologizing for being a few minutes late and we begin to chat like old friends. He’s utterly charming and modest, almost bemused by some of his successes, and there have been many. Not only does he have scores of singles under his belt, there are two Billboard #1 hits and multiple albums, including brand new “Cross The Line”, done in collaboration with Marco Lys. Below, Chris and I chat about his signature sound, his love of collaboration and creating “Cross The Line”. - “Cross The Line” out now on Nervous Records

The Glass – At Swim Two Birds (Review)

The Glass

At Swim Two Birds

Released by Plant Music

Though Dublin-raised live electronic duo The Glass has been around for six years, it’s just now that their first album, “At Swim Two Birds”, has come to life. Looking at their history, dotted with singles, and a near album – the seven-track EP “Couples Therapy” – it begs the question, after already releasing a wealth of material…why an album? Why now? The answer, according to The Glass’ Dominique Keegan, is simply that those six years were needed for them to mature and commit to being electronic artists. This core idea ...

Kompute Records 10 Year Anniversary – Interview

Chicago-based Kompute Musik is a musical anomaly. Part label and part artist collective, Kompute has grown from the inner circle of four founders – Matt Nee, Brad Sarpalius, Steve Hitchell and Marcus Gossmeyer – to a clothing line, a roster of over a dozen international talents including Italy’s Alexander Robotnick and an enviable release history with cult-like status among fans. With releases that defy category by dancing across genres from electro to techno and even rock, Kompute’s success almost seems like a fluke – until their methods are revealed. Their artists regularly collaborate, they hold creative expression above all else, they have a central headquarters for their roster to kick back in and they even host Kompute BBQs on the regular. Celebrating their 10-year anniversary, label co-founder Matt Nee speaks to URB on defying the odds and the ‘it’ factor …
